Howard falls into that
category. He had to sit out
one tournament, however,
because he said he couldn’t
find a boater before the field
was set. The draw for the
wildcard - where and when
- he said would be deter
mined sometime in October,
with the event taking place
in November.

“There’s a school down in
Florida I’m really looking
at,” she said. It is a school
on the pristine Gulf Coast,
but she said it is a good pro
gram.
“When I go to stuff like
(the showcase), I see how
many girls are actually play
ing and how many are really
good. There’s so much tal
ent. I try (to hold my own).”
The Burkett family moved
to Houston County from
Newport News, Va., when
Danielle was in the sixth
grade. She said Virginia - at
least her part of the state
- didn’t have youth softball
for girls, so she started out
playing baseball. She made
the switch to softball upon
arriving in Georgia.
“They didn’t have soft
ball when I was there,” said
Burkett. “They added it the
next year.”
She described playing
baseball “with the boys”
a toughening experience
because “you can’t be a girl.”
That’s not to say playing the
high school fast-pitch game
doesn’t require toughness.
She said she only had to
adjust to underhand pitching
and not having “the boys” as
teammates anymore.
“I wanted to play with
the girls,” said Burkett,
who also learned the value
of teamwork in softball. “It
can’t just be about yourself.
You have to rely on other
people. You can’t do every
thing yourself.”
Burkett perhaps really
signaled her return to soft
ball when Houston County
played at Tift County in the
second game of the season on
Aug. 21. The Bears wound
up winning 6-2, but it was
Burkett, at second base, who
thwarted a rally by a strong
hitting Blue Devil team.
“I think it was bases load
ed, there was a shot and I
backhanded it and threw it
to first,” she recalled about
an inning where Tift only
scored once. “It probably

Northside’s softball team is
in a deep hole. Not from com
petition or the standings, but
rather from having to make
up games via rainouts. The
latest to go was Thursday’s
road trip to Stockbridge.
To date, head coach Mitch
Horton said, the Lady Eagles
now have two games to make
up - those slated for Monday
and Tuesday.
And speaking of Tuesday.
This past Tuesday, despite
beating Jones County 3-0 on
the road, “It was a tough
hard-fought game,” said
Horton. “We were fortunate
to pull it out in the end. We
did leave six runners on base
including the bases loaded in
the sixth with none out and
did not score.”
Ah, but with Sarah Purvis
on the mound, in terms of
the “big picture,” it didn’t
matter quite that much.
That’s because the Lady
Eagles starter pitched a one
hitter, striking out 12 in the
process. She has now, Horton
said, pitched 25 consecutive
scoreless innings and has
given up only two earned
runs in 36 innings.
The Lady Eagles, who only
had five hits of their own,
scored one of their runs in the
third and the other two in the
fifth. Heather Langston was
their leading hitter against
the Lady Greyhounds. She
went 2-4 and, Horton said, is
now hitting .455.
fish came in at 6 pounds,
4 ounces. His total catch
after the first day of compe
tition - going head-to-head
against 180 other co-anglers
(there were also 180 “boat
ers” - the guys at the front
of the boat) was 10 pounds,
seven ounces. That was for
four fish.
After that first day, in
which he said he - the two of
them - “flipped docks”, the
field was cut to the top 30 (30
each boaters and co-anglers).
The way things work for co
would have scored a cou
ple of more runs if it went
through.”
This Burkett may have
had other motivation to
get back in the high school
game. The other Burkett,
younger sister Ashlee, has
grown into a prospect her
self with a strong hitting
performance in last year’s
state playoffs. Ashlee had
four hits - including a home
run - and four runs batted
in when Houston beat Tift
again 6-4 at home Monday.
“She did really good last
year,” said sister Danielle.
“In the offseason she had
shoulder surgery, so she’s
trying to work her way back.
She’s got the hitting down
obviously, but her throwing,
she’s still working on it.”
And Danielle confirmed
that Ashlee did need this
operation and it wasn’t
another misdiagnosis in the
Burkett family. She is still
keeping a close eye on her
own health even though she
said she is feeling well.
“I have an inhaler just in
case anything does happen,”
she said. “I’m good so far.”
