ALABAMA— In 1989, Selma (pop. 20.512) was
designated the suite's official butterfly capital and the East
ern tiger swallowtail its mascot. The monarch butterfly
was designated the official state insect.
ARKANSAS —-The highest upside-down inver
sion roller coaster in the world is at Magic Spnngs and
Crystal Rills theme park and water park in Hot Springs
(pop. 35,750), where the X-Coaster rockets riders 150 feet
in die air, flips them upside down and sends them on a
corkscrew roll at more than 65 mph.
FLO RI DA —Nicholas Toth of Tarpon Springs (pop.
21,003) makes traditional copper and brass diving hel
mets for sponge divers, continuing the craft he learned
from his Greek-immigrant grandfather.
GEO RGIA —The world's largest ice cream float—
-3,000 gallons of Vanilla Coke and ice cream—was created
by the Coca-Cola Co. in May in Atlanta. A 15-foot-tall
glass held the 10-ton treat.
KENTUCKY —Bom Louis Marshall Jones in 191.3
in Niagara, the banjo player and comedian was dubbed

"Grandpa Jones” at age 22 by singer Bradley Kincaid,
who said Jones sounded grumpy during their early morn
ing radio shows. Jones, who performed on Hue Haw and
the Grand Ole Opry, died in 1998.
LOUISIANA —-Tlie 200-year-old Oakley House
is the centerpiece of the Audubon State Historic Site, a
100-acre wildlife preserve near St. Francisville (pop. 1,712).
Artist and naturalist John James Audubon stayed at the
house in 1821 and drew inspiration for many of the birds
in his Birds of America series.
MISSISSIPPI —Bom in Staikville (pop. 21,869) in
1962 and raised in Crawford (pop. 655), Jerry Rice is con
sidered one of footballs greatest receivers. When he retired
after 20 seasons, mostly with the San Francisco 49ers, he
held .38 NFL records. Rice attended Mississippi Valley
State University in Itta Bena (pop. 2,208).
NORTH CAROLINA —Since the 17505,
Yates Mill has stood on its foundation despite floods,
hurricanes and war. The restored and working gristmill
is the centerpiece of Historic Yates Mill County Park
near Raleigh.

loop five times for 100 miles at Frozen Head State Park
at Wartburg (pop. 890). A “fun run” of 60 miles also
is held.
VIRGINIA —The oldest living Kentucky Derby
winner is Genuine Risk, .30, who is still frisky and living
in retirement at Newsread Farm in the rolling hills of
Upperville. Genuine Risk won the derby in 1980.
WEST VIRGINIA —-The first memorial built
to honor the 400,000 blacks who fought in World War
I was the Kimball World War Memorial, dedicated in
1928 in Kimball (pop. 411). About 1,500 of those veter
ans were from McDowell County (pop. 27,329).
