HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL Cen. Gwinnett 27, Warner Robins 24 By MATTHEW BROWN Journal Sports Writer No good. That was the judgment of a potential game-tying 27-yard field goal attempt for Warner Robins High Saturday at McConnell-Talbert Stadium. The ruling ruined what was a record-setting night for Demons kicker David Clark and alio wed Central Gwinnett High to send Warner Robins to a stunning 0-3 record on the 2007 season. Central Gwinnett, the team that shut out the Demons last season in Lawrenceville 17-0, needed two overtime periods to sweep the two-year series by a final of 27-24. Clark, a junior, is fast becoming the center of atten tion of Warner Robins foot ball after he began his legacy in his sophomore season. In the 2006 state playoffs, Clark set a school record for the longest made field goal with a 50-yard boot. At 1:56 left to play in the first quarter of Saturday’s game, Clark bet tered that mark by making an attempt of 52 yards. From that point, Clark seemed to be the best chance head coach Bryan Way saw of getting his team on the scoreboard. The kicker would miss his next two attempts of 45 yards in the second quar ter and a 57-yarder in the third that certainly had the distance but was off target to the left. Clark then made field goals of 42 yards in the fourth period and 24 yards in the first overtime. His second overtime attempt of 27 yards, which came with Central Gwinnett leading 27-24 on a 30-yard field goal by Steven Bott, came from the left hash. This kick also had the distance, but was called wide to the right. Warner Robins did accom plish a first for the 2007 sea son on Saturday by scoring a touchdown from its offen sive unit. Still, the Demon defense outdid the offense in point totals by accounting for eight. The defense had two interceptions - one returned \ V -Jwf ... .. Central Gwinnett brought an offensive set - not to mention uniforms - that resembled West Virginia. But, on the first series, it appeared the Knights needed more snapping practice as three in a row went over the head of quarterback Devan Strickland. On the third one, Strickland recovered the football in the end zone, but later fumbled it out of bounds giving Warner Robins a 2-0 lead. Clark’s school-record field goal came after Atian Jones blocked a Knight punt for Warner Robins possession on the CG 37-yard-line. The offense only advanced the ball one yard in three plays, but Clark was on the mark to put his team up 5-0. That’s five points on the board, but no first downs for the Demons. Junior lineman Cody Dorman was incredibly active with at least four first-half tackles, and he joined big sophomore Jeffrey Whitaker for a sack on the next Knight series. Strickland would recover, though, for a first down completion on his 38. On the first play of the second quarter, speedster Malcolm Moulton caught a pass on the run, broke two tackles in the secondary and scored from 65 yards out. This would be the first of four lead changes in the game, Central Gwinnett now standing on top 7-5. The Knight defense came to town prepared to shut down the Demons’ running game, and in that first half it had six stops for lost yard age. Quarterback Shane Sans threw outside to W.J. McAllister for a second first down on the 35. Giant tack le Rob Bailey ran upfield to clear room for Rashad Wynes to gain 19 yards to the 16. Two plays later, center Kaleb Turner and guards Derek Stover and Milo Austin set up a fullback trap for Watts, who scored that first offen sive touchdown on a 10-yard run. With Clark’s PAT, the Demons were back in front 12-7 at 1:43 of the second quarter. But the lead at halftime would belong to Central Gwinnett at 14-12, and it was on the second connection by Strickland and Malcolm completed with five seconds left on the clock. Third quarter momen tum quickly went to Warner Robins on the strength of the two interceptions. Central Gwinnett had the football first, but Josh Palmer took it away on a second-down pick he returned 33 yards for a touchdown. The Demons missed the chance at conversion points as there were only nine play ers on the field to line up. So the team took a timeout and set up for two points. The run failed, keeping the score at 18-14. Another active Warner Robins defender Saturday was Cameron Eddy. He helped on two tackles to force the Knights to punt from its 18, and with a penalty the Demons were on the CG 30. However, they would imme diately lose possession on a fumble at the 11. With a sack by Dorman and Thomas Bruce, the home team got the football into the fourth period. Darious Lane began it with a 15-yard gain to the CG 40. With 8:44 remaining, Clark hit his 42- yard field goal, and the game had a more conventional score at 21-14. Central Gwinnett tied the score 21-21 on a drive of 80 yards and 11 plays. Warner Robins couldn’t get past the Knights’ loaded box, and Eddy stopped a key play on the outside. So the game would go to overtime. Warner Robins had the first shot from the 15, and Clark made a 24-yard field goal when the offense could not get a first down. Central Gwinnett drove up to the 2, but Palmer and Bruce kept them out of the i ENI/Gary Harmon Fans enjoy a little tailgating.
