Luckily, I didn’t have many snake adven tures back then, but I sure have made up for them p ■*- f JBj Angela Lineberger Me and the Boys in the last few years. Before we could build our house a few years ago, we had to clean up some trash that the previous landown ers had left on the land we bought. It was March and we had the boys and some friends working to get the trash loaded up in the truck. There was an old tire that needed to be loaded, but it was filled with trash, vines, and such. I brilliantly thought that if I cleaned out the tire it would be easier to load. I thought this was a great idea until I pulled out a huge rattle snake with the trash. I immediately saw that trash wasn’t the only thing that was in the tire, so I threw the tire as far as I could and yelled “S*#@!” at the top of my lungs. Thankfully, the snake was still hibernating and just wanted to crawl back into the tire and sleep, but since that adventure, “S*#@” has become my snake word. I reserve that word just for the times that I see a snake or pick up a snake, which hope fully isn’t very frequently. The boys just love it when I use the snake word. Hunter found one of those snakes in the shop one evening. It was very small, so he thought he would catch it. He donned some very thick leather work gloves and pro ceeded to catch his prey. He was able to catch the snake with very little effort. He and the other boys were so proud of the snake and wanted to show me their “catch”. I was upstairs in the house. I hear them coming up the stairs telling me that they have a surprise for me. Now, I know how their surprises are, so I’m instantly on alert. I yelled at them before they got to the top of the stairs, “Don’t you even think of scaring me”. They said, “We won’t, you just have to see what Hunter has”. Well, Hunter is holding this snake in his gloved hands. I take one look at it and yell; “Get that rattle snake out of this house”. Pandemonium breaks loose. Hunter is screaming and running around in circles with the snake still in his hands. The other boys are jumping on the beds and yelling. Finally, Hunter tears down the stairs and out into the yard where he tosses the snake. I asked him, “What possessed you to pick up a rattle snake and bring it into the house”. He replied, “Well, daddy told me he thought it was a king snake”. One night the boys and their dad were on the way home. It was already dark out, and they came upon a very large snake in the road that they happened to run over. Being the curious sort that they are, they just had to back up and see what kind of snake it was and make sure that it was dead. It happened to be a rattle snake and was dead, so they wanted to bring it home to show me how big it was. The only problem was that they were in a little station wagon and didn’t want to ride down the road with a snake in the car with them, dead or alive. Their dad had the idea to put the snake on the roof of the car to get it home. He proceeds to sling the snake onto the top of the car not realizing that Ben was on the other side. He slung' a little too hard and the snake went completely over the car and landed on top of Ben. Now, Ben isn’t crazy about snakes anyway, and a snake falling on him from the sky completely sent him over the edge. He didn’t say the snake word, but the boys love to demonstrate how Ben danced around and screamed when the snake fell on top of him. By the way, we’re visiting churches in the area, and we even have our own supply of snakes we can bring. See ya’ Sunday!
