Coach Rodney Culver house
never hesitated in sending
pinch runner Haley Way
home. Westfield broke a 2-2
tie and improved to 9-8 on
the season.
Way was running for
eighth-grader Christine
Campbell, who reached on
an infield single and moved
over a base when Audrey
Clearman drew a walk.
Pitcher Kelsey Gilliam
won for the seventh time
with eight strikeouts and
one walk in seven innings.
The visiting Cavaliers had
seven hits, three of them
coming in the first inning.
Kaitlin Westfall, the leading
hitter in GISA AAA softball,
had two hits but did not
score a run.
Culverhouse put Wrye on
first base in the defensive
lineup and kept Clearman at
catcher, the spot Wrye played
all last season. Clearman con
tinued a good season throw
ing out would-be base steal
ers as she nabbed Westfall
at second in the first inning.
She also held on to a foul tip
for a strikeout when Mt. de
Sales took a 1-0 lead.
Westfield tied the game 1-
1 in the home first as Jamie
Marshall doubled to deep
left and scored on a double
by Campbell in the left-cen
ter gap. Both hits came with
two outs.
Marshall drove in the go
ahead run for Westfield in the
home third. Shae Horsting
scored after leading off with
a single. Hanna Jones, who
moved from first base to her
original shortstop position,
executed the sacrifice bunt
in that inning.
Mt. de Sales quickly drew
back even 2-2 on one hit
and a walk in the top of the
fourth. The run scored on a
none more impressive that
a save that led to Deanna
LeShoure’s score. With that
play, Warner Robins not only
tied the game at 13-13, but
maintained a two-point lead
up to 18-16.
Pate had a key block bring
ing Houston back even. But
Warner Robins went back
ahead as Hotchkiss set a
Causey kill and Drain scored
off her serve. When Houston
looked to have a point, offi
cials called for a do-over,
of 37. They opened the new year
falling to Dutchtowp, a program
with very few wins in its brief
history, 41-36, but came back to
outlast Jones County 51-43.
“We tried to make a lot of adjust
ments during the offseason,” said
Scott about Perry’s need for defen
sive improvement, especially in the
passing game. “So far this year I
feel like we’ve gotten better in our
pass coverage, but we have a long
way to do in that regard. *
“They are a little bit different
than Jackson. They are going to
throw it 75 to 80 percent of the
time. They are a straight drop
back pass team. We will have to do
a good job mixing it up between
pressure and playing man and
wild pitch with two outs.
Wrye handled her duties
at first base well. In the
second the Cavs had a run
ner on first with one out.
On a grounder to Mason
Moreland at second base,
Wrye took her throw and
then fired the ball across the
diamond to Campbell to get
a double play at third base.
Westfield entered the game
as eight-time region softball
champions. The Hornets
clinched first in Region 3-
AAA Thursday by demol
ishing Southland Academy
in Americus 12-1 in five
innings. Gilliam struck out
six and scattered two hits
without a walk in getting
the win, and she doubled for
an RBI at the plate.
Campbell drove in four
runs on two hits, Jones had
three hits with an RBI and
Wrye drove in two runs in
what was her first game
back after the injury.
According to Culverhouse,
with the region title clinched
Westfield will not go back to
Albany to complete a sus
pended game with Deerfield-
Windsor.
The Hornets will fin
ish its non-region schedule
with a road game today in
Macon against Stratford
and a home game Thursday
against George Walton.

“It was the first win at Jackson;
by Perry High in the history of this
school.”
Jackson High, a 10-win team in
football one year ago, was looking
to shake off an 0-2 start, but could
not defend its home turf. Hayward
must have found it more to his
liking as he scored four rushing
touchdowns and accumulated 217
yards on the ground.
“The biggest thing is we took
advantage of what they were doing
to us defensively,” said Scott. “That
was a huge key.”
