Buying a
Digital Camera
Thinking about buying a
digital camera? Here are a lew facts to know
before you go shopping:
Price. Expect to pay $1(X) to S4(X) for
a medium-quality camera. Professional-level
digitals can cost thousands. Fortunately, good
cameras can be found at all price ranges.
Megapixels. A camera’s megapixel rat
ing reveals how much detail the camera can
capture —and how sharp your pictures will
look. Think of pixels as very small dots that
make up the picture. The more “dots,” the
better the picture. Most cameras now have at
least 5 megapixels: this is enough to produce
a quality 11-by-14-inch print.
Size. The smallest digital cameras weigh a
few ounces and can fit in a purse or pocket.
Zoom. Most have a built-in zoom lens.
There are two types of zooms: digital and
optical. The optical zoom—expressed by a
value such as 3X or sX—is more important;
it produces better quality pictures than a
digital zoom. An optical zoom can “reach out"
and pull in an image, whereas a digital zoom
merely enlarges a section of the image.
Image stabilization. This helps to reduce
the effect of camera movement. If you choose
a camera with a high zoom rating, be sure it
offers image stabilization.
Batteries. Consider buying a camera that
accepts AA batteries rather than one that
requires an expensive rechargeable batter)’
pack. Although they are lieavier than some
battery packs, disposable AAs are read
ily available and can be used if the cameras
rechargeable batteries lose tlieir charge.
Storage. Digital cameras do not use film.
Instead, they record their images on tiny,
removable “memory cards.” A postage-stamp
size card may’ record hundreds of images and
is reusable. You can transfer the images from
the card to your computer, or you can use a
machine at a one-hour camera service center
to make standard prints or enlargements. You
can buy a high-capacity card for about S4O.
