WR man sentenced to 135 months

past week the sentenc
ing of Joseph Jordan Sr.,
of Warner Robins, by the
Honorable C. Ashley Royal,
U.S. district judge for the
Middle District of Georgia.
Jordan’s codefendants,
Eretta Nelson, formerly of
Fort Valley, Ozee Rogers
Sr., of Macon and Hewis
Cross of Leesburg, were
previously sentenced by
Royal Sept. 7.
Jordan, Nelson, Rogers
and Cross were convicted
following a jury trial Jan.

holiday nears

to help Georgians conserve
energy, save money and
protect the environment,
Georgia’s third annual
ENERGY STAR Sales Tax
Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m.
Oct. 4 and runs through mid
night Oct. 4.
“I want to encourage the
people of Georgia to use this
opportunity to buy applianc
es and products that have
earned the ENERGY STAR,”
said Gov. Sonny Perdue.
“Not only do ENERGY STAR
appliances and products help
families save on their util
ity bills, they reduce energy
consumption and enable us
to be good stewards of the
environment.”
ENERGY STAR designates
products that meet strict
energy efficiency criteria set
by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency and U.S.
Department of Energy.
During the holiday consum
ers can save both state and
local sales taxes on qualified
appliances and products that
cost $1,500 or less. Qualified
appliances and products
include dishwashers, clothes
washers, air conditioners,
ceiling fans, fluorescent
light bulbs, dehumidifiers,
programmable thermostats,
refrigerators and more.

to 108 months, Nelson
70 months and Cross to a
term of 51.
They were also ordered
to pay restitution to the
IRS in the amount of
$530,663.27, and to serve
a term of three years on
supervised release follow
ing their terms of impris
onment.
Evidence at trial proved
that the defendants were
the promoters and recruit
ers for a scheme to file
false claims for refunds.
Defendants recruited tax
payers to file false amend
ed tax returns, wherein the
she said, noting that no
staff cuts were anticipat
ed. She pointed out that
once the president of the
proposed Houston County
Chamber of Commerce was
hired, that person would
have a voice in future deci
sions about staffing.

Evidence at trial showed
that 95 of these false
claims were filed with the
Internal Revenue Service
totaling $5,672,093, and
that 10 refunds were actu
ally paid before the scheme
was stopped by the IRS.

Naomi M. Ballard has
entered Basic Cadet Training
at the U.S. Air Force
Academy, Colorado Springs,
Colo., in preparation to enter
the first academic year at
the academy. The six-week,
two-phased orientation pro
gram must be successfully
completed by the cadets prior
to entering their freshman
year. The training prepares
men and women to meet the
rigorous mental and physi
cal challenges experienced by
new cadets.
Phase one involves per
sonal in-processing, orienta
tion, and training in the fun
damentals of being a cadet.
Cadet trainees are prepared
to adjust from civilian to mil
itary life and disciplines, and
learn proper wear of the uni
form, saluting policies and
procedures, drill and cere
mony, marching, and living
quarters standards.

Joe Andrews has been part
of that growth from the out
set, and he has also helped
the staff grow. Moreover, he
has brought spiritual leader
ship to his work, according
to owners Bill and Wanda
Davis.

to administration,” Wanda
Davis said, “and he has pro
vided a pathway for growth
to many who may not have
had the opportunity other
wise. With an open Bible on
his desk, and opening every

He is leaving now, but he’s

ny and reception, and were
Mayor Jim Worrall, his wife,
Michelle, daughters Allysia
and Heather, and son Seth,
and so many friends and
well-wishers that the park
ing lot of the Summerhill
complex was packed.
