WR takes home win over HC
Improves region record to 10-0
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
With the weight of a major
decision off her shoulders,
Kristen Graham turned
her focus to leading the
Warner Robins High soft
ball Demonettes to an undis
puted top seed in Region
1-AAAAA.
Graham, verbally commit
ted to play college softball
at Virginia Tech (see related
story), threw a four-hitter
Monday with 14 strikeouts
and one walk as Warner
Robins topped city and
region rival Houston County
High 4-1 at home.
The Demonettes remain
the only team undefeated in
1-AAAAA at 10-0, but there
is still some work left in the
regular season. Head coach
Brenda Arnett takes the club
down to Lowndes County
this coming weekend to take
on Valdosta High and the
region’s second-place team,
Lowndes.
“That’s where we want to
be,” said Arnett about fin
ishing as the No. 1 seed for
the 1-AAAAA tournament,
which also takes place in
Valdosta. “We don’t want to
come home with a loss. We
want to win both of them.
“We need to at least win
one (to maintain first place).

Warner Robins is sched
uled to play Lowndes first on
Friday. The Demonettes won
the first meeting on their
home turf 10-0. Lowndes
has a 7-2 region record and
must play Houston County
at home on Saturday and
Tift County, which beat
Lowndes in a recent tourna
ment game, on Oct. 9.
By losing Monday’s game,
Houston fell to 7-3 in the
region. The Bears - which
make the same trip Warner
Robins makes this weekend
- still have a shot at second
place if they can sweep the
last two games in Lowndes
County.
Graham started the game
against Houston on a major
roll with five strikeouts in
a row. It’s a string Taylor
Fountain snapped with a
bunt single. Her only walk
came against Danielle
Burkett with one out in the
top of the third, but Graham
snagged a liner back her way
and turned the double play.
The senior has come a
long way in terms of control.
On Aug. 18 against Valdosta
at home, she got the win
despite issuing nine walks
(with 14 strikeouts).

Hornets locus on little
things in big motchup
By DON MONCRIEF
Journal Managing Editor
The “little things.”
Those were the priority of
Head Coach Ronnie Jones
and staff during Westfield’s
bye week this past week.
Little things you don’t
typically have time to work
on, Jones said, like mak
ing some corrections in the
kicking game and such.
“Maybe not things we’re
doing wrong,” he said, “but
little things like on punts,
PATs, things like that.”
Little things like keeping
“contact” during the prac
tice week to a minimum,
because, as he said, part of
the good thing about a bye
week is also the chance to
get some aches and bruises
better. And, perhaps the
biggest little thing for the
players during this time:
'1 think the biggest thing lop us is
we’ve got to continue to play our game
... with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of
fun... keep that up."

Perry routs Americus-Sumter
Now comes the waiting game
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
For Jeff Sans and the
Perry High softball
Panthers, the rest of this
week is a game of wait
and-see.
After winning Monday’s
regular-season non-region
finale 14-3 at Americus-
Sumter County, Perry
turns its attention towards
Dublin and West Laurens
High on Thursday. There,
West Laurens plays Peach
County High in a game
that could either make the
final Region 4-AAA softball
standings nice and easy or
quite confusing.
A win by West Laurens
gives the Raiders a sweep
of Peach County and first
Culpepper leads PAC in
inaugural swim meet
Special to the Journal
The Premier Aquatic Club held its inaugural swim
invitational this past weekend at Fort Valley State
University.
Leading the PAC was a familiar name in local high
school competition, Anne Culpepper, who swam to four
first place finishes in the Senior Girls division. She
won the 200-yard IM, 200-yard Freestyle, 100-Yard
Backstroke, and the 500-yard Freestyle.
Culpepper also swam on the women’s 200 Medley Relay
and 200 Freestyle relay, both of which also finished first.
