Demonettes , Graham commits to Virginia Tech
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
Kristen Graham made a
history-making decision
as far as her high school’s
softball program goes. The
ace Warner Robins High
School pitcher committed
to sign with 2007 Atlantic
Coast Conference champion
Virginia Tech, and thus will
become the first Demonette
to earn a softball scholar
ship at the NCAA Division
I level.
“I like the campus and the
atmosphere,” said Graham

offense couldn’t capitalize
on a first-inning rally that
got leadoff hitter Lauren
Graham on third base with
one out.
She couldn’t score on
a grounder to Kaitlyn
Carriker at third base, and
after K. Graham was hit
by a pitch, Houston catcher
Ashlee Burkett threw out
the courtesy runner on a
double steal attempt.
But the Demonettes put
a 1-0 lead on the board in
the second as Kim Burgess
and Kylie Barrett led off
with back-to-back hits. With
the bases loaded and two
outs, L. Graham was hit by
a pitch to drive in the run
the hard way.
Warner Robins added
what would be three cru
cial insurance runs in the
home sixth, but the rally
didn’t come without some
weird activities on the bases.
Barrett ripped the game’s
first extra-base hit and her
second safety overall with
a double to the left-field
wall. Amy Hutchinson drew
a walk, and that’s where
things got a little nervy for
the Demonette faithful.
Both runners took off on
a double steal, only Barrett
found herself about to be
in a rundown and worked
her way back to second
base. The problem was that
Hutchinson had reached
that base, and found the
best thing for her was to
retreat back to first. That
drew a late throw to first
that Hutchinson beat out
and allowed Barrett to take
third base anyway.

In winning the ACC last
year, Virginia Tech had a
15-5 record in conference
play and 49-16 overall. The
season for the Hokies ended
in an NCAA Regional tour
nament in Columbus, Ohio,
where Cal. St. Fullerton beat
Virginia Tech 1-0. The final
Hutchinson’ would even
tually steal second on a 2-2
pitch to Sierra Love, who
then drew a walk to load the
bags.
Your Right To Know
In this country, politicians understand that the more you
know about government, the better off we all are. So, they
created public notices to be printed in the newspaper.

ESPN/USA Softball poll had
Virginia Tech ranked No.
14.
“They’re building a really
good program up there,”
said Graham. “They hope
to one day be in the World
Series.”
She was also impressed
with the campus and its loca
tion. The city of Blacksburg,
Va., is nestled between the
Blue Ridge and Allegheny
mountains of southwestern
Virginia. The pitcher noted
that this historic school,

Brenna Byrd, the No. 9
designated player, drove in
a run with a grounder to
first, and Lauren Graham
singled for an RBI. Jensen
Barrett also got credit for an
RBI even though Houston
turned her grounder into
a double play completed at
home plate.
“The lower end of the line
up did a good job hitting for
us,” said Arnett.
L. Graham had a key run
ning catch in centerfield as
Warner Robins tried to fin
ish the game off in the sev
enth.
But Houston County,
maybe remembering the big
comeback win against the
Demonettes at home one
year ago that won the region
championship, got a single
from Sarah Ling and double
from Fountain to get a run.
K. Graham did end the
game with two more whiffs.
Her catcher, Maci Brown,
gave the team two good
catches on high pop-ups
behind the plate.

“Everything matches,”
said Graham..“ You can tell
it’s an older school. They
kept everything the same.
It’s really been built up from
what they started off with,
and haven’t changed any
thing.”
Graham chose Virginia
Tech over Georgia and South
Carolina.
“That’s, awesome,” said
Demonettes head coach
Brenda Arnett. “The first
Division I player since I’ve
been here, so it’s big.”
