HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL State names MAES's Davis top support staff member Special to the Journal Patti Davis, Matt Arthur Elementary School sec retary and bookkeeper, won the 2007 “Carolyn Abercrombie” Outstanding Educational Support Staff Award recently. She received the award this past month at the Secretary and Support Staff Conference held by the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders in Atlanta. This award, according to a release, is given to a sup port staff member who has leadership and management skills and an exemplary ser vice record. The honoree must also demonstrate pro fessional growth and be a role model for others. The award is named after a long-time GAEL employee, Carolyn Abercrombie. “I am honored to receive this award,” commented Davis. “I am blessed to have the best administration, stu dents, faculty and staff to work with each day. There is no way to put into words the feelings I have about my job. Having someone who trusts my judgment and allows me to work to my full potential is the key to hap piness in this position. I am grateful for the relationship I have with my principal and the faculty at Matt Arthur Elementary. A pluot is a cross between a plum and apricot, which gives the fruit a sweeter taste. The students had previously discussed the fruit in PE and then had a chance to try it for themselves. The pluots were a hit with the stu dents. Sturick and Huber were awarded third place at their grade levels for the “Plains, Peanuts and a President Postcard Contest.” Carter presented the Peppy student appointed to advisopy council To help serve as liaison between DOE and students Special to the Journal Perry High School junior, Emily Jones, was recently appointed to the state super intendent of school’s Student Advisory Council. Jones is one of 50 students select ed from around the state to discuss state level decisions that will affect students. In the past the council has discussed issues such as testing, school climate, drop out rates and the Georgia graduation rule. The council will meet four times throughout the 2007-08 school year with Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox. They will serve as liaisons between the Department of Education and the students in Georgia. Students may apply to participate in the Student Advisory Council at the begin ning of each school year. Participants are awards to the two students before the Peanut Festival parade Sept. 22 in Plains. The postcard contest was sponsored by the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site Education Program and the Peanut Institute. This year’s theme was “Plains, Peanuts and a President” with all entries centered on the peanut. Carter began the NHS Education Program in 1996 to give students the oppor tunity to explore historic resources through inter active activities at Plains High School Museum, the Depot and the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm. selected by a committee of representatives from the Georgia Department of Education based on stu dents’ responses to ques tions. Jones is an honors stu dent and a member of the following Perry High organizations: varsity competition cheerlead- n JONES ing, National Honor Society, Prayer Club, FBLA (treasurer), Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Jr. Civitans. She is also participating in the Junior Leadership program sponsored by the Perry Area Chamber of Commerce.
