♦ SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2007 10A The People ’s Business A quick guide to what our elected and appointed officials are doing The Perry City Council Meeting Tuesday ■ Heard a presentation in work session from Ray Smith of Kendall Metering and Rick Fero of Triton Water, regard ing a proposed new water and gas metering system that would be computerized, using three fixed-base towers and a central computer system. ■ Noted the purchase of a new digital recording system for the minutes of meetings ■ Held public hearing with no opposition for a 494.535-acre Planned Unit development to be built by Woodland properties at a location near Perry Parkway, Highway 341 North and Airport Road Extension ■ Held a public hearing with no opposition regarding the rezon ing and annexation of 12.353. acres from Houston County, which will be zoned industrial as part of the Perry-Houston County Airport development. ■ Approved liquor license requests from Mohammad Quddus for Beer Packaged to Go, 1205 Main Street; Pierre Beauchamps for Super Food Mart, 517 Perry Parkway, and Habibullas M. Ulmer for Perry Texaco Food Mart, 1315 South Perry Parkway. ■ Increased building inspec tion fees ■ Approved a request from the Houston County Commissioners to waive the permit fee for a new purchasing warehouse facility on Kings Chapel Road Agency offers cooling assistance Special to the Journal The Middle Georgia Community Action Agency will begin scheduling appoint ments Wednesday for those who want to receive assistance with household cooling costs. Applications will be taken on a first come,first-served basis at Christ Lutheran Church, 733 Carroll St., Perry, for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To be eligible for assistance, households must have an income at or below 150 Local Coast Guardsman plays key role in cutter changing homeports Special to the Journal The Coast Guard Cutter Munro officially changed homeport from Alameda, Calif., to Kodiak, Alaska, during a ceremony at Coast Guard Base Kodiak recent ly- It did so with the help of many, one of which was Joshua Scott Thigpen. Thigpen is a fireman E-3 for the Coast Guard and a native of Perry. He gradu ated from Houston County High School in 2007, with his mother and father, Richard and JoAnn, still living in Perry - along with at least one other relative. As far as the move, accord ing to a release, it provides a large patrolling cutter to the Alaska and Bering Sea area to replace the recently decommissioned Coast Guard Cutter Storis, previously home ported in Kodiak. The Munro is a 378-foot high endurance cutter named after Petty Officer Ist Class Douglas Munro, the Coast Guard’s only Phillips enters training Special to the Journal Lianna M. Phillips has entered Basic Cadet Training at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in prepara tion to enter the first aca demic year at the academy. The six-week, two-phased orientation program must be successfully completed by the cadets prior to enter ing their freshman year. The training prepares men and women to meet the rig orous mental and physical challenges experienced by new cadets. Phase one involves per sonal in-processing, orien tation, and training in the fundamentals of being a cadet. She is the daughter of Charles and Donna Phillips of Grove Lane, Kathleen. ■ Approved a recommen dation of the Public Works Oversight Committee to assign two employees to clean up city cemeteries, ■ Approved the funding of lights for the youth football field at Creekwood Park and placed a $1.5 million building for Creekwood park on the priority list for capital improvements ■ Tabled a DDA request to place the Commerce Street gazebo on site where the Elwood Waites building is to be removed on the basis that the land in question does not belong to the city, ■ Voted to proceed with the automated meter reading pro posal discussed in the work ses sion (see related story) ■ Voted to endorse the Georgia Municipal Association's position on House Speaker Glenn Richardson’s proposal to end property taxes in Georgia and replace the funds with an expanded sales tax. The Council opposes Richardson’s proposal. The Houston County Commissioners Meeting Thursday ■ Heard from citizen Maurice Braswell who suggested that they not increase business license fees, but cut costs instead by reducing costs and by such measures as not hav ing a separately elected County Commission Chairman or a county administrator. ■ Appointed Betty Pearsall of Centerville to the Houston County Library Board, and Kristina Simms of Perry to the Region 4 Mental Health, percent of the federal poverty level. The maximum incomes allowed are $15,315 for a one-person household, $20,535 for a two person household, $25,755 for a three-per son household, $30,975 for a four-person household. When applying, the follow information will be required: proof of income for the last 30 days for all household members 18 and over; Social Security cards for all household members; current electric bill. Morton will also be eligible to serve in other counties on a per diem basis, and will be paid by those counties. ■ Authorized the creation of a new HVAC Technician, Grade 17, position for the Public Works Department at the request of Director Tommy Stalnaker. Two other currently unfilled positions at a lower level of pay will be abolished to make this higher level position possible ■ Approved one annexa tion request from the City of Centerville, having to do with a 15.61 acre site between Thomson Road and Houston Lake Road, which will be used for housing development ■ Approved two annexation requests from the City of Warner Robins. One is in he area of Carl Vinson Parkway and will be used for commercial purposes. The new BMW’s will replace the aging Harley-Davidsons that have been on the traffic fleet for years. The new BMW motorcycles are police specific containing mounts for radars and lasers; video cameras and LED light systems. The new motorcycles also offer, according to a release, better handling Health Department to offer flu shots Special to the Journal Officials from the Houston County Health Department announced this week they will begin offering flu shots Oct. 15. The shot will cost $25 and is available at no charge to those on Medicaid, Peachcare and Medicare Part B. The health department is open Bam to 4:30 pm. No appointment is necessary.
