They’re there to protect
the public and to provide
medical services all the way
from dealing with blisters to
getting out the defibrillator
in case of cardiac arrest.
And they stay really busy,
according to Lee Dixon, a
paramedic with the Houston
County EMS who was work
ing at the fair on Sunday.
“We cared for at least 50
people here just last night,”
she says, and she estimates
about the same number by 3
p.m. on Sunday.
The EMS team at the fair
can offer advanced life sup
port care, give medication
and basically do anything
a hospital emergency room
staff could do. In most cases,
to save time, they take golf
carts out to the site of a
reported injury or health
problem, and they’re backed
up in all their work by the
Perry firefighters, who are
also trained to offer basic life
support.
You might not even notice
they’re there, but if you hap
pen to have a child who’s
hurt, as Angie Stieber did on
Sunday, you’ll be very thank

AP Scholar.
Students took AP Exams
in May, after completing
the challenging college-level
courses at their schools. The
College Board recognizes
several levels of achievement
based on students’ perfor

Two Westfield students
qualified for the AP Scholar
with Distinction Award by
earning an average grade
of at least 3.5 on all AP
Exams taken, and grades of
3 or higher on five or more
of those exams. (All AP
exams are scored on a scale
of 1-5.) These Westfield stu
dents are Sarah Moredock
and Christopher Thompson,
members of the Class of
2007.
Three Westfield students
qualified for the AP Scholar
Award by completing three
or more AP Exams, with
grades of 3 or higher. These
AP Scholars at Westfield
are Katie Hayes and Ryan
Kinsley, members of the
Class of 2007, and Lee
Stokes, member of Class of
2008. Lee has one more year
in which to complete college
level work and possibly earn
another AP Scholar Award.
Most of the nation’s col
leges and universities award
credit, advanced placement,
or both based on success
ful performance on the AP
Exams. More than 1,400
institutions award a full

“I could see the expres
sion on his face,” his mom
said, still looking anxious as
paramedics got the foot and
ankle stabilized and packed
with ice. “I made them stop
the ride.”
Once she saw that Cole was
in good hands she was able to
leave and round up her other
children before heading to
the hospital.
Earlier, another mom
needed help and reassurance
when her child began to run
a fever and had a febrile sei

While some problems may
be fair-related - like Cole
Stieber’s accident on the
midway ride, the emergency
workers all agree that the
range of medical problems
they deal with is pretty nor
mal for any large population
in a given day. After all, right
now, there are thousands of
people of all ages at the fair.
There are people who don’t
speak English, too, and Liana

the team because she is bi
lingual and can understand
