Medina Goes to School Every year, more than 57 million girls around the world are deprived of an education. In Ethiopia's Afar region, a staggering 89 percent of children like ten-year-old Medina Humed Ahmed do not have the chance-to go to school. Live, Learn and Thrive unicef# RsO Live, Learn and Thrive ' Partnership. Because her parents are poor, nomadic sheepherders who move often, school was an impossible dream for Medina. But in 2005, UNICEF changed all that. UNICEF opened a "mobile" school that moves with nomadic communities and offers flexible hours so that children like Medina have the chance for an education. Thanks to UNICEF, Medina has been an enthusiastic,student for the past two years and now dreams of becoming a pilot.
