14 designated 'distinguished 1 schools

Fourteen Title I schools in Houston
County have been recognized by the
Georgia Department of Education
as 2007-2008 Title I Distinguished
Schools. Distinguished schools serve
as models for schools with similar
demographics that have been identi
fied for improvement.
“Every year, the number of Houston
County schools honored as a Title I
Distinguished School increases,” said
Superintendent David Carpenter. “We
are proud of this accomplishment and
will continue to work throughout our
system to produce high-achieving stu
dents.

Constitution Day

The students and faculty
of Hilltop Elementary cel
ebrated Constitution Day
Sept. 17.
According to a release, stu
dents participated in numer
ous activities throughout the
day.
From pre-K to fifth grade,
the Hawks, according to the
release, were soaring in their
red, white and blue attire.
Throughout the day, stu
dents took part in lessons cen
tered on the Constitution.
Red, white and blue treats
were had by many.
The day ended with a
patriotic parade provided by
the Kindergarten classes of
Hilltop Elementary.

Distinguished schools have made
adequate yearly progress under the
federal No Child Left Behind Act for
at least three years. Schools that have
made AYP for four or more consecu
tive years are invited to a special event
honoring Title I Distinguished Schools.
Houston’s County’s 14 schools will be
recognized Nov. 2, in Atlanta at the
Georgia World Congress Center begin
ning at 7 p.m.

High Family and Consumer Sciences and FCCLA classes
about developing good communication and conflict reso
lution skills. He emphasized good decision making and
the importance of “talking it out” rather than “fighting it
out.” Nelda Clay is the instructor of the classes.
