and they are not merely
looking to close the gap with
the Trojans, but surpass it.
“They are an excellent
football team,” said Scott of
Peach County, whom Perry
faces at Anderson Field in
Ft. Valley. “Offensively they
have (running back) Mareo
Howard and Keith .Searcy
at quarterback who’s pretty
good. Defensively they have
a linebacker who I think is a
very good player.
“They are a quality team,
but they have chinks in their
armor. If we play the way
we’re capable of playing ...”
Scott remained hush-hush
on several things about this
matchup, but did invoke sev
eral names from the Trojan
past like Chris Slaughter,
Antonio Henton and Darius
Dewberry, the type of major
talent this school has pro
duced. If there is one player
who brings the experience of
championship seasons into
this game, it is Howard, who
started as a sophomore two
years ago.
“In my opinion, he’s the
best running back they’ve
had,” said Scott. “They’ve
had a history of great run
ning backs, kids who were
great players. To me, he’s
probably the most explosive
downhill runner I’ve ever
seen at Peach County. He is
very fast, fluid, and he can
go”
The significant change in
Peach County football this
year occurred when Ranee
Gillespe left the head coaching
post to join Chris Hatcher’s
staff at Georgia Southern
University. Chad Campbell,
brother of Hawkinsville’s
Lee Campbell, is now in
charge of the Trojans.
“He’s a coach that’s been
in that program, knows the
system, has paid his dues
and very deserving of that
job,” said Scott. “If it ain’t
broke, don’t fix it. From their
practice plan, to the work of
coaches, their offense and
defense, there hasn’t been
a lot of changes. He hired a
lot of new coaches (including
former Northside player and
assistant Jason Respert),
but at the same time he’s
kept the continuity with the
program the same as coach
Gillespe had.”
On the subject of planning,
Perry High had to do a lot of
planning - as it does every
week - last week for West
Laurens High. There were
some differences, though,
as sophomore Dardra Ragin
was making his first var
sity start in place of injured
senior quarterback Casey
Hayward.
With the game on the line,
though, Hayward did take
the field and engineered a
game-winning touchdown
drive with just over a minute
left in regulation. Hayward
rushed for 70 yards on the
series and scored the touch
down that gave Perry a 35-
31 win against the Raiders.
Scott said it wasn’t neces
sarily a part of that plan to
use Hayward if they needed

“It was a great decision on
(offensive coordinator Chad)
Alligood’s part,” said Scott.
“We were playing pretty
good until about five min
utes to go in the ball game,
and then the bottom fell out.
At the same time, (Alligood)
and I talked pre-game, and
that was his decision. I let
him do the offense, and I
thought it was a great call
on his part.
“As a head coach, I can’t
do everything. I thought
(Alligood) did a good job of
play calling keeping Casey
tight to the boundaries. We
still had three timeouts, but
didn’t use a timeout. It was
a great job on Casey’s part
executing.”
Perry led by as much as
three touchdowns (28-7) with
Ragin running things and
Jacorey Lane setting a per
sonal best with 233 rushing
yards. These are things Scott
said can’t be overlooked for
Hayward’s late heroics.

“I thought Ragin played
unbelievably well, gave us
an opportunity to win. If
we could have played bet
ter defensively late in the
game, we wouldn’t have
needed Casey,” said Scott.
“Everybody had been keying
on Brandon (Golden), and I
thought we made some good
adjustments in our forma
tions to isolate Jacorey as
the featured back. I thought
Brandon did a good job block
ing.”
Scott, however, is silent on
just what Peach County is
going to see, a new adjust
ment or more of what West
Laurens saw. He does hope
to see another great game
out of his offensive line.
“I felt in the first half they
dominated the line of scrim
mage,” said Scott.

Monday. Farms had a sack,
one of four Perry had on
defense to go with an inter
ception. Those were good
defensive highlights, but as
the coach alluded to earlier
West Laurens jumped ahead
31-28 with two touchdowns
in the last three minutes.
“We’ve been real inconsis

“We play good at times and
really bad at times. We

In this country, politicians understand that the more you

tackles. That cost us.
“If you go up and down on
offense, you are still going to
score points. If we go up and
down on defense, the other
team scores, and that’s not
good.”
Perry needs to be only
going up this Friday against
Peach. For Scott, it will be a
matter of solid defense and
ball control.
“It’s going to be a game
of turnovers and field posi
tion,” he said. “There will
be a lot of emotion. We just
have to execute in every
thing we do.”
