That record is 17:17 and is held by Marc Kushinka. “It fell apart about a mile and a half,” said Burkhardt about his shot at the record. “It never came back. I ran a pretty good race up until then. Normally you can keep that pace, but I couldn’t run after that.” Burkhardt said this is defi nitely a course that will “kill” runners who aren’t used to the hills, especially the first one at about the half-mile mark. But it is the home course for the Demons, and he said he gets in the high 17s to low 18s normally. In the 2006 county cham pionships, Burkhardt placed second overall to Kushinka. “You learn how to pace yourself and run fast,” he said about the lessons learned from the graduated senior. “Since he was always ahead of me, I could look up and tell where I was compared NSffwfc ’*./.. ■ 535 r *W ;.r*r~ ..- - •jaah^i^.w-^ im af : '~^ *&*■:„*& ;mm Mouldin leads Breitbach on their first lap around. umr VjHmrawT j The boys begin their competition .
