“We know we can only do
what we can do. You can’t
worry about what the other
team’s going to do.”
The champions had some
reason to be worried, though,
about this year with sev
eral injury issues and a slow
start in the win-loss column.
Culverhouse remembers a
record standing at 3-7, but
with players getting over the
injuries the Hornets charged
down the stretch at 14-2.
“It wasn’t so much that
one player we got back made
that huge of a difference,”
he said. “It just gave every
body on the team confidence.
Everybody’s playing better,
not just one or two play
ers came in, took over and
started dominating.”
With the injuries came
some lineup adjustments,
such as Audrey Clearman
going from first base to catch
er when catcher Jennifer
Wrye hurt her thumb at
Freedom Park. Culverhouse
said Clearman had played

catcher before and planned
on making this a permanent
change.
“We didn’t know if Jennifer
was coming back,” he said.
“She still needs to protect
her injuries, and at first base
she handles it pretty well.
You make as few changes as
you possibly can.”
The Hornets saw the
emergence of a new talent
on a roster that lost just
one senior from last year.
That would be eighth-grad
er Christine Campbell, who
took over at third base and
has more than contributed
enough with her bat.
“She’s played really good
defense,” said Culverhouse.
“She came in knowing what
her responsibilities were
going to be. She wasn’t sup
posed to bear the weight of
the team, just do what I ask
her to do.”
Jamie Marshall is a senior
this year, and she will surely
remember catching the last
out of the 2006 champion
ship game in centerfield.
The coach said Marshall has
battled injuries in her var
sity career, but this year has

been her best both in the
outfield and as an aggressive
hitter. Marshall's hitting got
so strong that Culverhouse
put her in the No. 4 spot in
the order.
When it comes to pitch
ing, Westfield knows there’s
a great chance to win with
Kelsey Gilliam, who threw
all five games on that one
day last year in Dublin, in
the circle. Gilliam too had to
work through injuries that
saw her go through nearly a
whole month without pitch
ing.
“I want to say she’s
something like 10-1
since she returned,” said
Culverhouse.
