Luke and Hunter also love to run by the floats talking to the peo ple in the parade that they know as they meander down the street. Since Tully is now a teenager, he doesn’t attend parades with us. We embarrass him. One thing is for sure, the boys never meet a stranger. One parade we’ll never for get is the Byron Christmas Parade that we accidentally attended - we got stopped by it on the way back from getting a Christmas tree - when Tal, Hunter, Ben, and Luke were 3. The boys were having a great time watch ing the floats and cars go by. One float that was in the parade was a nursing home float that had several elder ly people sitting on it. The elderly people were tossing candy to the boys when all of a sudden Luke picks up a piece of candy off the street, rares back, and throws it as hard as he can at the float. This little old lady that is sitting on the float almost falls out of her chair and grabs her forehead. He obvi ously nailed her good. All the other little old ladies on the float go to her aide. They are just baffled wondering where the candy came from. We were morti fied, but tried to look inno October 21, 20071 October 22, 2007 October 23, 20071 cent and pretend we didn’t know what had happened, when in reality we knew exactly where the candy had come from. Thankfully, she wasn’t seriously hurt. But ever since that parade, we call Luke “Ernest T. Bass”. You know, the hill billy on “The Andy Griffith” Show that loves to throw rocks and bust everyone’s windows in Mayberry. Needless to say, we ■haven’t been back to the Byron Christmas Parade. I think we’ll just stay in Perry where we know everyone and our chances of getting arrested are a little slim mer. Finally, cover crops act as a protective blanket for the soil, preventing erosion by wind and rain. This is most important to our farmers. The following are descrip tions of some of the most popular cover crops. My favorite is rye, or win ter rye (Secale cereale). Rye is a very popular cover crop for gardeners because of its cold hardiness and heavy dry matter production. Rye will germinate at 33 degrees F, grows rapidly at tempera tures between 40 and 65 degrees, and can even tol erate temps as low as -40 degrees F! Sow rye at the rate of 2 1/2 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Planting at least four weeks before the first fall killing frost allows it to get a fast start so that it can cover the soil well. Allow at least two weeks between plow ing under time and spring planting to allow time for complete decomposition. Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) is another good fall cover crop. It germi nates readily at 45 degrees F and grows best at temps between 45 and 75 degrees F. Ryegrass is a totally dif ferent plant from rye grain, and since its roots are slower to rot, it should be tilled in earlier than rye. Be careful not to let annual ryegrass go to seed, or it may become a weed. Sow at the same rate as rye grain. Wheat (Triticum aesti vum) performs much like rye, except that it prefers lower temperatures for ger mination (40 degrees) and 45 to 85 degrees for opti mum growth. Sow it at rates of between 2 1/2 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet and till it under at least two weeks before planting in the spring. More on cover crops at a later date. Later on down the line I will let you know why. My weakness in cats is tab bies. The reason: My first cats were tabbies, Sara Jane and Sissy. Sissy was a mama’s cat. She disappeared out of clear sight, never to be found. Sara Jane lived to be 20 years old. At that point I had her longer than I had been mar ried. So I have a tendency to pull tabbies from the Perry’ Animal Shelter to foster. Ollie was a tabby that I pulled to foster. He was a litter of four. I did bring all four home. Two of »the litter were adopt ed quickly. For some reason, people don’t adopt Tabbies as quickly as they do the pretty long haired babies. So I ended up keeping Ollie and his sister Sissy. Ollie was the “dad” to my foster kittens. His tempera ment was suited for the job. He knew how to love them yet knew how to put them in their place, as all kittens need to know. Ollie developed eye issues. I was cleaning his eyes every day. I knew he was not com fortable or happy. So I took him to Dr. Felix. Chronic dry eye - I have that! I have dealt with FeLV twice before in other fos ter cats, so I knew what lay ahead. I knew right off the bat that Ollie had to be sepa rated from my other cats. His cries hurt. Obviously he did not understand why. I do believe the stress of sepa ration and later depression hastened the disease. Feline Leukemia is trans mitted from one cat to anoth er by infected saliva. Sharing of water bowls, feed dish es, cat-to-cat grooming and cat bites lead to the spread of the disease. Kittens can acquire the virus in utero and through infected milk. Therefore, FeLV is a highly contagious disease.
