6A ♦ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2007 There are many physical differences between men, women QUESTION: You’ve discussed briefly some of the physiological and emotional differences between the sexes. Could you list other physical characteristics unique to males and females? DR. DOBSON: Men and women differ in countless ways, many of which they aren’t even conscious of. Here are just a few of those differences: 1. A woman has greater constitutional vitality, per haps because of her unique chromosomal pattern. Normally, she outlives a man by three or four years in the United States. Females sim ply have a stronger hold on life than males. 2. Men have a higher inci dence of death from almost every disease except disor ders related to female repro duction and breast cancer. 3. The sexes differ in skel etal structure. Women have Renewing number better than waiting for Congress I told you five years ago. Do not call. I’m not interested, can’t afford it, could care less, didn’t vote for the guy (still wouldn’t). I George Ayoub Columnist Morris News Service don’t like your tone. I can’t understand why one “uh uh” is not enough, and won der why, Pal, if you’re trying to sell me something, you wouldn’t go to the trouble of pronouncing my name cor rectly. Did I mention I’m not interested? Listen closely: “NO!” I’m hanging up now; why don’t you? Better yet, do not call. I told you as much five years ago. That’s when I put my phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry, a remarkable ros ter of 150 million phone numbers designed to keep telemarketers at bay and dinners uninterrupted. Nothing is perfect (except perhaps caller ID), and, demon dialers be damned, some creative types in the telemarketing business haven’t missed a beat. Still the Federal Trade Commission believes the DNCR is working. Nobody told me about Jan. 1, 2008, however. According to the law, that’s when phone numbers will start dropping off the regis try unless they are renewed. I actually have some months cushion, but unless I renew my number, dinner will once again be the family, the food, LETTER From page 4A another party because I will consider it a vote against Marshall. It is beyond my compre hension how someone who lives in Bibb County and isn’t aware first hand how the working poor struggle with providing health insur ance just for their children. Did Marshall poll his district to ask what they thought his should be? Did Marshall do research on the number of uninsured children in his district? Our children are our future. If we cannot afford to pro vide healthcare to them then are we really investing and protecting our future? With the number of uninsured chil dren - and do not even get me started on the current shortage of childhood vac cinations - we appear to be living in a third world country. m • issM a shorter head, broader face, less protrud ing chin, shorter legs and longer trunk. Women have a larger stomach, kidneys, liver and appendix, and smaller lungs than men. 5. Women have three important physiological functions totally absent in men - menstruation, preg nancy and lactation. Each of these mechanisms influ ences behavior and feelings significantly. Female hor monal patterns are more "Nobody told me about Jan. 1,2008, however. Several in that august body think having to renew our DNC registration is bunk. Now a proposed bill would make permanent our regis tered phone numbers. I vote yes. Renewing every five years is in the same family of flimflam and fleeces as one popular several years ago when a company would send you something and if you didn’t return it within 10 days, it was yours and you were theirs. In the meantime, given Congress’ penchant for the dither and the dawdle, I’m renewing.' Life is too short to have extended phone conversa tions with people I don’t know selling things I don’t want at prices I can’t afford. The FTC gets about 3 mil lion DNC complaints a year, compared to nearly 600,000 in 2003 when the law went into effect. Many violations go unreported, too, chalked up as simply another annoy ance of modern society. One of the reasons is the ingenuity of the telemarket ers. Some get around the law by posing, for example, as researchers (surveys, charities and politicians are exempt) who, only later in the conversation, try to sell you a set of steak knives, the world’s best widget or a time share in the Yukon. Trickier is the loophole in the law that gives compa- And we are the rich est country in the world! For example, a woman’s thyroid is larger and more active; it enlarges during menstruation and pregnancy, which makes her more prone to goiter, and provides resistance to cold. It is also associated with the smooth skin, relatively hair less body and the thin layer of subcutaneous fat that are important elements in the concept of personal beauty. 6. Women’s blood con tains more water (20 per cent fewer red cells). Since these supply oxygen to the body, she tires more easily and is more prone to faint. Her constitutional viability is therefore strictly a long range matter. If you want details, check out DNC at www.donotcall. gov. Oh, and that rumor going around about telemar keters attacking cell phone numbers? You’re right; it’s a rumor. Of course, telemarketers are simply trying to earn a living, too. I suppose it’s literally a numbers game. If you call enough of them, you’ll make a sale. If you call more, you’ll make more sales. While the first “no” should be good enough, neither should we take it personally when a stranger calls us in the pursuit of commerce. My sense is that Americans, however, do have a personal stake in their phone num bers, so when a stranger shows up on the other end of the line with a sales pitch, we’re already a little hinky. Their blood pressure (10 points lower than men) var ies more from minute to minute, but they have much less tendency to high blood pressure - at least until after menopause. 9. Women can withstand higher temperatures better than men due to a difference in their metabolism. 10. Men and women differ in every cell of their bodies because they carry a differ ing chromosomal pattern. The implications of those genetic components range from obvious to extremely subtle. Who can estimate how many other sex-related influences lie below the level of consciousness? In a congregation of just 270 people, a total of 21 families have adopted 25 children. This is remark able, and a shining example of a church committed to taking on a very important issue. There are millions of orphans around the world. And I can’t think of a better community than the church to respond. They have the families, the money and the worldwide presence to meet this head on. My hat goes off to the Burke family and Cornerstone Church of Christ in Lawrenceville for setting a great example. Lastly, a story for the “good news” file. DOBSON: I asked that question of more than 10,000 women who com pleted a questionnaire titled “Sources of Depression in Women.” The most fre quently reported concern was low self-esteem. More than 5 of an initial test group placed this prob lem at the top of the list, and 80 percent put it in the top five. These were primarily young, healthy women with seemingly happy marriages, which should have produced greater contentedness. Nevertheless, the majority struggled with feelings of inadequacy and a lack of confidence. Georgia’s new informed consent law requires (among other things) that women be given information about the abortion and the risks involved 24 hours before the procedure. Since 2005, more than 10,000 of the between 32,700 and 40,500 women who talked with their doc tor about having an abortion decided to give birth instead. In addition, less than 500 of the almost 2,300 minors con sidering an abortion went through with it. This means there are thousands of children liv ing in Georgia today because women were able to make a more informed decision when faced with the dif ficult choice. Requiring these phrases is one method of remind ing the child that his is not a “gimme, gimme” world.
