Warner Robins pitcher Kristin Graham tags out a Peachtree Ridge runner during the two teams’ AAAAA state tour
nament opener in Columbus Thursday.
WR falls in tourney opener
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
With a little flare here, a
slow roller there, Peachtree
Ridge scored the one and
only run Thursday to
immediately send Warner
Robins into the losers’
bracket of the GHSA Class
AAAAA softball champion
ship tournament held at
South Commons Park in
Columbus.A first-round loss
in this double-elimination
format means the need for
six wins in a row in order
to win a state title. After
the 1-0 loss to the Lady
Lions, Warner Robins faced
winning three games in a
row Friday and three more
on Saturday. That lone
run for the Lions came as
catcher Sade Johnson, from
the No. 9 hole in the order,
grounded a ball past Amy
Hutcheson’s backhanded
stab at first base. The lead
off hitter, Gabby Bedard,
slapped an 0-2 pitch down
the third base line. The ball
stayed on the fair side all
the way to the bag.
Up next, Emily Osterhaus
singled the conventional
way to left to load the bases.
Jensen Barrett, Warner
Robins shortstop, gunned
a grounder to the plate for
one out. But Allison Leigh’s
shallow flare fell at the edge
of the outfield grass, with
Bedard scoring easily.
Warner Robins kept it a
one-run game as catcher

With Ivory out, Scott
gets coll tor Eagles
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
It would be easy to
believe Joe Scott is feel
ing the weight of an entire
school and an entire sec
tion of Warner Robins on his
shoulders. With the possible
season-ending leg injury
suffered last Friday by All-
State quarterback Marques
Ivory, Scott is now the one in
charge of leading the No. 1
Eagles on offense in defense
of the Class AAAA state
championship.
Scott was the No. 2 quar
terback all of 2006 when
Northside went 15-0 to win
state for the first time ever
in football and, though he
started the Eagles’ home
game with North Clayton
on Sept. 14, maintained that
role in 2007. WTien Northside
faced Upson-Lee High this
past Friday, the junior had
to take over when Ivory was
unable to continue, fie pro
ceeded to complete six passes
for more than 100 yards and
a touchdown as Northside
came back to win 31-26 and
stayed unbeaten at 8-0.
At the conclusion of
Tuesday’s practice, Scott
received some congratula
tory handshakes from the
usual visitors and spoke
about his new role.
“A little bit,” said Scott
about the kind of pressure
he is now experiencing.
“Mainly, we’re a team. We
just lost one. He was a great
player, but we still have 10
other guys out there.
“(My job is) to help lead,

Silver medal in the Under 10
foil event.

seventh annual Thank-a-Vet Run Nov. 10 at the Museum
of Aviation at Robins Air Force Base. The run will begin

Volleyball group to hold tryouts
The Central Georgia Volleyball Association is a local
non-profit/volunteer organization that competes in U.S.
Volleyball sanctioned Junior Nationals tournaments.
The organization will be holding tryouts for its fifth sea
son Nov. 10 from 9 a.m.-noon in the Perry Middle school
gymnasium. Tryouts are open to girls and boys of all skill
levels ages 12-18.
help get the ball out there
and let the receivers make
plays and get the ball to
whoever’s at running back.”
Head coach Conrad Nix
said the loss of one player to
injury does not shut down the
football season at Northside
High School. As Scott allud
ed to, there could be a sec
ond injury concern going
into the Eagles’ final regular
season sub-region game on
Nov. 2 against state-ranked
Westside High at McConnell-
Talbert Stadiilm. Running
back Tijuan Green’s status
is also in doubt.
But there is no doubt that
Ivory is out for the game with
the Seminoles, the Region
4-AAAA play-in round the
following week and the first
few rounds of the state play
offs. Ivory, who had thrown
for 975 yards and rushed
for 138 in 2007, had surgery
on his broken left fibula on
Tuesday.
“We’re still going to play
games,” said Nix. “Our expec
tations haven’t changed. He
was obviously a good player
and I hate it for him. I hate
it for us. It’s a very untimely
thing. You certainly don’t
ever want to see that kind
of stuff happen, but you still
have to move on.”
Ivory, from the time he
was a sophomore backing
up Jacobi Rodrigues on a
state finalist Eagle team
in 2005, displayed several
physical tools that showed
he would put up huge num
bers himself. In 2006, he
threw for 1.823 yards and
