When pansies stop produc ing flowers in the dead of winter due to the cold and shorter days, violas contin ue to perform. They suffer less cold damage and keep right on blooming. Plus, they tend to tolerate a bit more shade than pansies. A few basics can enhance our success with violas and pansies. First, they’ll need at least four hours of sunshine per day. Second, they must have good drainage. One year Santa brought him a weather station that had to be mounted on the top of the house. He also can’t live without his rechargeable batteries and is a regular viewer of CNN so he can keep up to date with current events, especially if they are weather related. I think that the robotic vacuum cleaner is a great gift. Ben gets to enjoy it, and I get a somewhat cleaner floor in the process. All of the boys think that Santa needs to bring us a new computer. They think that our computer is just terribly outdated. I have to admit, we aren’t quite on the cutting edge of technol ogy at our house. It’s a full time job just keeping the old appliances that we have in working order. One item that is really hard to find these days is “icicles”. You know the long silver strands that you hang on the tree. The boys just love them and think that Christmas is not complete without them. Forget that they stick to anyone that comes within three feet of the tree and end up all over the floor. I have spent many hours driving from store to store in search of icicles. When I finally find them, I bring them home and the boys excitingly open the box. Then they proceed to take fistfuls of icicles and throw them in clumps on the tree and each other, where more end up on floor than on the branches.
