The Panthers break through their banner in a win over Southwest Friday in Macon.
Top seed, maybe more at stake
in Perry-Northeast match-up
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
November will soon be here,
and that means now that each
and every football
game Perry High
School plays the
rest of the season
has serious and
significant mean
ing.
When the 5-
3 Panthers host
Northeast High of
Northeast at
Perry, Friday,
7:30 p.m.
Macon on Friday at Herb St. John
Stadium, a win or a loss means
the difference between first place
and fourth place in the 4-AAA
south sub-region. That means the
difference between hosting the
all-important state tournament
play-in round against someone like
Jackson or Ola and going on the
road to meet Henry County and its
500-yard passing potential again.
The south sub-region setup for
the weekend is as such: in addi
tion to Perry facing Northeast,
Peach County hosts Southwest-
Macon and Central-Macon travels
to Dublin to face West Laurens.
Should both Perry and Peach win,
they would finish tied for first at
4-1 with the Panthers owning the
head-to-head tiebreaker. But if the
Panthers end up in a third-place tie
with Central at 3-2, the Chargers
own that tiebreaker and would
push Perry to the No. 4 spot.
There are other scenarios that
could happen this weekend. The

Perry-Northeast game, how
ever, represents the only match
up between teams with winning
records in the sub-region. As head
coach Andy Scott told his play
ers at the conclusion of Monday’s
practice, they need to commit to
beating the Raiders on Friday and
render anyone else’s results moot.
“The stakes are high in any region
game,” said Scott. “When you get
late in the year, they become more
magnified. We’re playing for first
or fourth.”
Northeast was the one team from
4-AAA last year to go on the road
in the play-in round and win to
qualify for the state playoffs. The
Raiders are 6-2 overall, but may be
the one program that flies under
the proverbial radar of football
teams in Macon and all of Central
Georgia. Scott and several of his
fellow region coaches, though,
believed from the beginning that
Northeast had the talent to chal
lenge for the region championship.
“They are a team that every
body picked when the year started
to possibly win the region,” said
Scott. “They are that good. They
have a receiver (Javaris Brown)
who has committed to Virginia.
They have a very athletic quar
terback (sophomore Mike Palmer)
who can run and throw. They are
big on defense, probably one of the
best defenses we’ve faced all year.
It will be a major test.”

Panthers fend of Patriots

Coming off an historic win
over a two-time defending state
championship club, Perry High’s
football Panthers had more than
they could handle from an upstart
Southwest High bunch Friday at
Henderson Memorial Stadium
in Macon. Casey Hayward
accounted for four touchdowns
in Perry’s 42-29 win against the
Patriots, a win coming one week
after the Panthers humbled the
Peach County High Trojans by
20 in Ft. Valley.
The most important outcome
of the night for Perry is that
it stayed in the top spot in the
Region 4-AAA south sub-region,
one that had a four-way tie
for first place when the night
began. The Panthers stand at 3-
1 in the sub-region while Peach
also improved to 3-1 by beating
Central (another team in that tie
of scrimmage in 6-6, 275-pound
Everette Curtis. The leader on
defense coming in was linebacker
Quinton McCornell, whose spe
cialty was making tackles in the
backfield.
Last year, Perry struck early and
held on to beat the Raiders 38-20.

Hayward rushed for two touch
downs and threw for two more in
Macon Friday. His passing totals
were 7-for-12 for 165 yards, all
of which came in the first half.
Hayward had 65 rushing yards
on 14 carries.
Jacorey Lane produced anoth
er 200-yard plus rushing per
formance as he ran 14 times for
206 yards (an average of 14.7
per carry) and one touchdown.
He made one pass reception for
51 yards.
Brandon Golden scored on the
ground in one of his 11 carries,
which netted him 75 yards.
Southwest’s junior tailback
Adrian Alexander, all of 5-8 and
165 pounds, rushed for three
touchdowns. He carried 25 times
for 130 yards.

Westfield's

In the end, Pinewood was the
key, or at least a major player.
The Patriots

faced off this

with much
more than a
game at stake.

The loser ... well, here’s how
Hornet Head Coach Ronnie
Jones put it: “If we’d have won,”
he said, “we could even be fac

second in the region. The loss,
and I haven’t really looked at
all the numbers yet, put us out
if something strange doesn’t
