ANNIVERSARY
m Retha and Leroy Bennett
Wednesday-Friday, November 7-9, 2007
This week in HHJ history:
30 years ago:
“Georgia farmers surprised at 1977 peanut crop,” or so the headline read. It was a reference to the fact
peanut farmers, due to the dry weather, did not believe their peanuts would take. But, according to the
newspaper report, “the rains began and peanuts began to make.” At the time, Georgia peanut harvest
figures were at 734,717 tons - short of the previous year’s total of 777,608. As good as that news was
for peanut farmers, it was apparently that much worse for cotton growers. A report on the same page had
them behind the harvesting power cun/e due to the rains.
20 years ago:
A report has it that “North Georgia areas are paradise for state squirrel hunters." (If you look around, it
isn’t hard to realize that apparently it still is.)
Also, Benjamin Ellis Dennard, called a “legend in law enforcement and leadership”, retires after
more than 35 years on the force and a school bus driver is given a three-day suspension - and suf
fers the wrath of one mother - after a child is left on a bus asleep and locked inside the bus compound.
Additionally, the reportedly “long-awaited” parking change/lane restriping on a six-block section of Main
Street is finally completed. The delay - how long was not specified - was reportedly due to equipment fail
ure.
