Valdosta gets past HoCo
By MATTHEW BROWN
1 Journal Sports Writer
\ Even with five first-half
thkeaways and three quarter
hack sacks, Houston County
High’s Bears couldn’t earn
that elusive first Region 1-
AAAAA football win Saturday
o,t McConnell-Talbert
Stadium. Valdosta High, the
sjecond-place team in the
league, grounded out three
second-half touchdowns and
completely shut down the
Bears’ running game in a
21-0 final.
The second quarter alone
in this game had seven com
bined turnovers, four commit
ted by the Valdosta Wildcats.
The first half ended the same
as it began with 0-0 on the
scoreboard. The second half
was free of turnovers, but it
was the Wildcats that took
over with its running game
with 106 yards gained on the
ground (202 for the whole
contest).
Houston County, mean
while, was struggling to stay
in above zero in net yard
age from its running game.
The Bears had just six rush
ing yards in the first half,
15 when the third quarter
ended, but two late sacks of
the quarterback in the final
period took all of it away.
Jeff Thompson was 10-for
-24 in the passing game for
144 yards. Tight end Michael
Ragan was the leading
receiver with four catches for
70 yards, all coming in the
first half.
It was the Bears’ defense
that excelled and created all
kinds of excitement for the
home fans. Valdosta had the
football eight times on offense
in the first half, threw three
interceptions and lost two
fumbles. The Bears didn’t
fare much better in the give
away department with two
lost fumbles and one inter
cepted pass.

third-down conversions in
the opening Bear series. A
3rd-and-14 connection got 26
yards on the Wildcat 21. But
Houston stalled from there
and missed a 37-yard field
goal try.
A pair of juniors, Lee
Johnson and Tony Larkin,
forced Valdosta into a three
and-out as Larkin registered
the first sack on quarterback
Michael Turner.
Late in the first quarter,
Larkin got help from junior
Jacob Walker on the second
sack after the Wildcats drove
up to the HC 26. Senior Rico
Hendricks started the rash of
turnovers with an intercep
tion and 25-yard return to
the 40.
Three plays in a row in the
second quarter were turn
overs, starting with Valdosta
recovering a fumble on its 48.
Senior Farris Norris followed
with his first of two intercep
tions with a 13-yard return.
That drive didn’t last but one
play and a second lost fumble
in a row on the VH 47.
But Houston’s defense
remained stingy as senior
linebacker Chris Prewett’s
shoestring tackle on a recep
tion put Valdosta in a punt
ing situation. The Wildcats
snapped for the fake, but W.
Johnson stopped the play for
no gain.
Norris also recovered a fum
ble by Arnold on Valdosta’s
42. Ragan fought off tight
coverage for a catch on the
30, but Houston lost those
yards on a botched option
and a sack.
The half wouldn’t end
without another series of
three turnovers in a row. Lee
Johnson recovered a fumbled
handoff on the VH 46 only to
see Valdosta get an intercep
tion and return to the HC 47.
The Wildcats tried the flank
er option pass, but Norris
was there for the intercep
tion on his 18.

despite a combined sack by
L. Johnson and Larkin that
forced a 3rd-and-18 at the
HC 31. Turner scrambled
away from more pressure
and found Arnold for a 21-
yard gain on the 10.
Coach Rick Tomberlin sent
in a full-house backfield, and
Arnold ended the deadlock
with a three-yard scoring
run. Valdosta did not get the
PAT, though, keeping it at
6-0. Houston County moved
into Wildcat ground with an
11-yard catch on third down
by senior back Jontavious
Smith. The home team had
an untimely slip trying to
convert 3rd-and-l and punt
ed away.
The Bears would lose one
more key conversion due to
the penalty flag. Houston
started the fourth, still down
6-0, with a drive on its 17.
Craig Presley made a 32-yard
catch on the 27 and Garrick
Davis ran for a first down on
the VH 38. •
On 4th-and-6 at the 34,
Presley made a catch-and
spin move for a sure first
down close to the ‘red zone,’
but officials spotted an illegal
block upfield. The result was
fourth down again on the 32,
and the Bears couldn’t con
vert this one.
The Wildcats proceeded to
cover 44 yards in eight rush
ing plays. On 4th-and-4 at
the HC 25, Marcus McNair
slipped upfield open from
the full-house set and caught
Turner’s pass for a touch
down at 4:13 remaining.
Turner’s pass for two points
was good upping the lead to
14-0.
Valdosta’s third touchdown
was a result of Houston los
ing the ball on downs after
a fourth-down sack on the
Bear 5. Arnold scored his
second touchdown on a one
yard full-house run at 1:52.
Houston County concludes
regular-season play on the
road Friday at Coffee County
High in Douglas.

Nopthside avoids upset
From staff reports
A shocker. There is a hint in
that statement that Westside
upset Northside in the two
teams’ Region 48-AAAA
match-up Friday night at
McConnell-Talbert Stadium.
Not quite - but close. The
Eagles eventually prevailed
22-12.
The “shocker” reference
came mainly from the first
few seconds of play - two
carries by the Seminoles to
be exact. And perhaps the
halftime score: Westside 12,
Northside 7.
Whether it was the fact
the Eagles were coming of a
bye week and were sluggish
or simply that Westside had
done their homework, either
way the Seminoles took the
opening kickoff 42 yards and
then on the first play from
scrimmage struck for a 48-
yard touchdown pass.
The only good news in that
for Northside was that the
extra point was missed.
Following that score, both
teams took turns running the
gamut from none-to-little-to
some success, each time with
the end result the same: No
score.
While the Seminoles didn’t
suffer tremendously from bad
field position - they started
their fifth drive of the half at
the 45, the rest were around
the 30 - the Eagles did.
Four of Northside’s first
half drives started around the

have sort of faded in the
end, but they’ve been close.”
On offense Jones said the
Eagles use what he called the
old double wing T with two
tight ends. “Power type, no
split ends,” he said. “If you
go to sleep they will throw
the football. If they can’t
move it with the double wing
T, they will spread it out.”
What makes it dangerous,
he said, was “They’ll flip
the back, pull the guard and
tackle and lead the quarter
back and fullback. You’ll get
everybody up there and stop
that and they’ll run the mis
direction.”
Leading their charge on
the ground - the team itself
averages about 200 on the
ground and 85 in the air
- is Nile Knapp who averages
6.33 yards per carry. In addi
tion to him, one of their other
standout ground gainers is
Gerry Smith who averages
6.06. On defense Sherwood,
which gives up pretty much
the same numbers as on
offense - around 200 rushing
and 85 passing - employs a
multiple five-front.
“They run a lot of 5-3,”
Jones said. “Or at least they
will against us. Every week
we’ve faced about the same.”
And speaking of every
week, Jones can’t help but
think back on the year and
think a bit about how it’s all
turned out.
“It’s just that there were
a couple of key games,” he
said. “I look back at Stratford
and Deerfield and think if
we just could have gotten
a win or two there. What’s

red zone - or much deeper
as was the case for their last
two possessions before the
break. On its second drive
of the first quarter it started
at the 35 and then finally
with just over three minutes
before the second quarter
began, it started at the 46.
That was the one that
eventually led to the Eagles’
score, an 11-play drive that
ended with Tijuan Green,
who found very little up the
middle all night, taking the
option wide and running it in
from the 4. Devon Pike added
the PAT so with 10:40 to go
in the second Northside led
7-6. Westside took the lead
back, however, 12-7 with just
over three minutes before
the break.
Northside’s woes in regard
to starting position picked up
right where it left off to start
the third quarter It started
its first drive from its own
20 and the second from its
own 12.
Green - in the grand
scheme of things - changed
their luck with a long run
to the Seminoles’ 30. That
drive stalled three plays later
but following a stand by the
Eagles’ defense, they took
the punt and the ball at their
own 45.
That still didn’t do the trick
in regard to putting points
on the board. And, a turn
over didn’t help. Something
“shocking” was necessary.
The Demons needed last
week’s big win against
Colquitt after the loss to Tift
and an overtime road loss
to third-place Coffee County.
Warner Robins got a boost
from three blocked punts in
Moultrie. Those gave them
short fields to work with.
It’s something, though,
Way doesn’t expect to hap
pen in the Lowndes game.
such a shame is to go up to
Pinewood and then they win
in the last few seconds.
“There are eight teams in
the playoffs. I certainly think
we’re certainly in the middle
of the pack but we’ve nothing
to show for it. It’s tough. I’m
not saying we’re a number
one or two team but we’re
in the mix but won’t get the
chance (unlike some of the
others).”
That aside, the goal right
now is to win and get to 6-4.
That, Jones said, is a marked
improvement over the 2-7-1
of a year before.

Enter Abry Jones.
To set the stage: Westside
was driving. In fact the
fourth quarter had started
by then. Jones’ actions came
into play as the Seminoles’
quarterback carried the ball
inside their own 10 and with
one eye on the endzone. But
he fumbled along the way.
Jones picked it up and car
ried it 57 yards in the oppo
site direction - all the way to
Northside’s 34. Two runs by
Green and then on the third
play from scrimmage, Joe
Scott found Brandon Jordan
with an 18-yard pass for the
touchdown. Scott hit Evan
Arthur on the two-point con
version to finally give the
Eagles back the lead, 15-12,
with just over 10 minutes left
to play.
The Seminoles to their
credit picked right back up
where they left off. They
drove again but this time
K.J. Morton’s interception
proved to be a deterrent.
The final shock to their
system came following that
as Northside went nine plays
and 67 yards. It appeared it
might stall - with the Eagles
taking a shot at a field goal
- but on third and long Scott
hit Nick Bass in the end
zone from 18 yards out for
the score. After four-and-out
by Westside, the Eagles ate
up the last few seconds of
the clock for their ninth win
without a loss.
Joe Dempsey had a break
out game at fullback. After
playing mostly special teams,
Dempsey earned a start and
rushed for 111 yards. He’s
one of several players Way
said has improved in this
rough 3-6 season. That list
includes quarterback W.J.
McAllister, running back
John Jackson and converted
linebacker Jordan Sanders.
“It means a lot to our
future,” he said. “To be 6-4
‘and’ have a bunch of people
coming back.”
