RALLIES From page 4B have sent the Panthers on the road to try to keep the season going. “I was so impressed with our kids,” said Scott, who saw Hayward score one other game-winning touch down inside the last minute on Oct. 12 at home against West Laurens. “For the last couple of weeks we’ve mem orized a Bible verse. This week it was Proverbs 6:3. It says, “Commit whatev er you do to the Lord and your plans will succeed.” We talked all week about com mitting, doing whatever you needed to do to make sure you came off the field a win ner. “This was probably one of the best weeks of practice I’ve ever had since I’ve been the head coach here. Our kids just really believe in each other. As long as there is time on the clock, our kids believe they have a chance to win.” Hayward garnered 344 yards of total offense with 27 rushes for 166 yards with two touchdowns and 13-for -23 passing for 178 yards and four touchdowns. Trey Smith caught six passes for 99 yards with two touch downs while Jacorey Lane netted 91 total yards with a touchdown catch. “When you have Lane, Hayward, Brandon Golden, Smith, Akeen Felder, J. R Lasseter, Cody Mahler, with that offensive line we have, we are really special on offense,” said Scott. Perry trailed by nine, 35-26, with 5:29 left in the fourth quarter. The Panthers used two minutes to get within three, 35-32, as the 6- 4 Smith made three catches, two to get first downs and the third in the end zone from six yards out. The play before the touchdown was a Smith catch over the middle for 19 yards on 3rd-and-7. The kickoff strategy took a dramatic turn from the previous two weeks. Bill Freeman, instead of aim ing towards the sidelines, kicked straight ahead and deep. Northeast was not pre pared for that, and its lone returner had to chase the ball down on the 4. Raider quarterback Michael Palmer converted a third down pass on the roll at the 15. Kanorris Davis pushed Northeast back, though, and forced the visi tors from Macon to punt and spot the Panther offense on the 42 with 55 seconds left and no timeouts. That distance shortened to 37 on a substitution foul on the Raiders. Then it was Hayward swinging a pass out that Lane turned into a gain to the 18. Two plays later Hayward ran the ball to lst-and-goal on the 7 with 18.4 seconds showing. The game-winning score came on second down, and Freeman’s PAT kick com pleted the comeback. The win was really sealed, though, on a Preston Mitchell intercep tion. Northeast did come out of the game with 376 yards of offense with a lot of dam age done by Palmer, Jarvaris Brown, Quinton McCornell, Sheldon Mays and Adarius Cornelius. They finished even with the Panthers in first downs with 20. The Raiders began the game with a long drive from its 34 to the Perry 26. Tony Davis got a hold of Cornelius after he hobbled a toss play for lost yards. On 4th-and -14, Jecavesia Hayward and Kered Whitest closed in on Palmer to force an incomple tion. Perry’s offense caught the first break when Lasseter punted the ball strong and the Raiders couldn’t handle the return. Austin White recovered with officials stop ping the play on the NE 5. Hayward scored the first touchdown of the night on a two-yard run at 5:27, and Freeman’s PAT made it a 7-0 game. It’s a lead that lasted only a minute as the Raiders ben efited from a personal foul call to reach midfield. Palmer then converted a third down pass to Cornelius on the PH 36, and his next throw went to Brown for a touchdown at 4:26. Perry’s response to that was to drive 82 yards and reclaim the lead early in the second quarter. Faced with 3rd-and-ll (due to two pen alties) on the 17, Hayward scrambled and found Golden alone up the middle for a 24-yard catch on the 41. Hayward rolled again and hit Smith for 18 yards on the Raider 30. In the second, Hayward took a 4th-and-8 snap from the 28. He fired to Smith over the middle on a touch down at 10:58. Freeman’s kick put Perry up 14-7. Hayward did just about everything from returning In this country, politicians understand that the more you know about government, the better off we all are. The Raider defense would come up with a play a 6 Gary Howard intercepted a ball and returned it to the Panther 36. Palmer was quite a scram bler himself at quarterback, and after a bit of running he threw his high looping ball complete to Mays for 25 yards to the 9. On the fade route, Brown caught a touchdown pass close to the back line at seven minutes until halftime. That helped tie it back up at 14-all. So it was Hayward’s turn to make more plays on a drive that began at the Panther 16. The quarterback did an immediate reversal of field on a run of 16 yards to the 33. Perry gained four more first downs in 10 plays up to the Raider 15. From there, Hayward swung a pass to his right, as Lane stood open in the flat. With blocks from Smith and Mahler, Lane had the touchdown with 53 seconds to go. The PAT kick didn’t go through, however, keep ing the score at 20-14. Northeast needed just one play to get a third tie of the half. It started with a kick off return by Brown to his 42. Palmer’s pass from there went to Mays, who put a few moves in the secondary on his way for a 58-yard touch down. Two penalties and three different sets later, the Raiders also failed on the conversion try, so the sec ond half became a new game with a 20-20 score. The third quarter belonged to Northeast and a drive of 96 yards. Lasseter punted the Raiders into that deep hole, but Palmer and Co. got out of it with two first downs up to the 30. Brown then SCHNEIDER f{otteltAectl(*n»,com for Complete! HugHtm Drirdh 800-323-8388 SPORTS made a 25-yard catch on the PH 45. Four plays later, McCornell ran off left tackle for a 20- yard touchdown at 5:24. Cornelius’ two-point run put the visitors ahead for the first time at 28-20. Northeast looked to be making another long series after a Lasseter punt to the NE 14. But freshman line backer Tyler Rogers inter cepted Palmer on the PH 41. Hayward’s constant pun ishment on the line finally paid off with a burst of 35 yards to the Raider 17. As the fourth quarter began, Hayward had his second successful fourth-down con version with a run to the 5. On what looked like a hobbled snap, Hayward’s running in the pocket left Golden open for a touch down catch at 11:02. Perry could not match Northeast’s two-point play and stayed two points behind at 28-26. fit n| ;■. y. : I wsSjf&s-. % Bf|i * Ab I* < ' 55976 eoe M/f-fo/v § ComSouitiu Neighbors Serving Neighbors PERRY CUSTOMERS: 1357-I).Sam Nunn Blvd. • Perry, GA 31069 Perry Customers: 224-4001 • l nadilla And Pinchursi ( .ustoniers: 627-3002 WWW.COMSOinH.NFI • QLFSIIONS@COMSOLTH.NET hfaUnhonr.fra™*'pnmmion.l in-rid)) V* i-icttomers rmiM iov no the wjtw plan or mamafe u> a new pfcui durmg she Ist vr.tr of their <tmrr.Hi. Northeast stretched that lead to nine with help from a botched play turned good. Mays could not catch a backwards throw, but was there to recover the ‘fumble’ and race down his sidelines 25 yards to the Perry 40. Cornelius and McCornell rushed for first downs up to the 15, and the Panther defense jumped offsides on 4th-and-5 on the 10. That’s because the Panthers lost to Henry County of the north sub region on Sept. 28 at home. This was the year for the south sub-region to be No. 1 if everything ended up equal.
