GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF

NATURAL RESOURCES
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

AIR PROTECTION BRANCH
STATE OF GEORGIA
NOTICE OF INTENT TO FLAG AIR
QUALITY DATA DUE TO
EXCEPTIONAL EVENTS
To All Interested Parties:
The Georgia Environmen
tal Protection Division announces its
intent to Flag Air Quality Data cover
ing air quality exceedances caused
by exceptional events.
The Georgia EPD is re
quired to notify the public of flagged
data under the exceptional Event
Rule finalized on May 21, 2007.
EPD's report will give comprehen
sive results from months of sampling
and research that was triggered by
the wildfires in south Georgia that
occurred over a two (2) month pe
riod and the prescribed fire incident
in February 2007.
Through upper air, sur
face and trajectory analysis, EPD
projects that the smoke from fire ac
tivity southeast of metro Atlanta in
early 2007 had a major contribution
to large increases in PM2.5 levels
observed around the Metro and
across central and southern Geor
gia.
Georgia EPD has a
PM2.5 air monitoring network con
sisting of twenty-eight (28) stations
located throughout the state. EPD
uses the air monitoring data to track
if air quality standards are being
met, to assist in enforcement ac
tions, to determine the improvement
or decline of air quality, to trace the
extent of allowable industrial expan
sion and to provide air pollution in
formation to the public.
