ALABAMA —The Hank Williams Trail includes
sites throughout the state with ties to the famous country
singer, including the service station garage in Andalusia
(pop. 8,794) where lie married Audrey Sheppard in 1944.
ARKANSAS —For tlie ninth consecutive year, Del
Hampton of Fort Smith scratched, strutted and clucked
his way to the National Cluck-Off championship at the
Wayne (Neb.) Chicken Show in July.
FLORIDA —Blackbeard’s blunderbuss—a muzzle
loading firearm—and Capt. Thomas Tews pirates chest
are among the 500 authentic buccaneering and booty
artifacts on exhibit at the Pirate Soul Museum in Key
West (pop. 25,478).
GEORGIA —In 1983, tlie U.S. Court of Appeals
upheld tlie constitutionality of the City Council of Augus
ta to require a business license of the owners of Blackie. a
"talking cat" that often performed for a fee on TV 7 and
radio shows. One of the owners' contentions was that
Blackies free speech had been violated. Tlie appeals court
noted that, though Blackie had unusual abilities, he was
not a person and was not protected by the Bill of Rights.

KENTUCKY-a game of marbles called rolley
hole often is under way at die Marble Super Dome of
Monroe County (pop. 11,756) in Tompkinsville (pop.
2,660). Many of the adult sharpshooters make their own
marbles.
LOUISIANA —Two of the states governors were
bom in or near Shiloh in Union Parish (pop. 22,803).
William Wright Heard, bom in 1853, served as governor
from 1900 to 1904, and Ruffin G. Pleasant, bom in 1871,
served from 1916 to 1920.
MISSISSIPPI —-Tlie Blue Front Case, a 1940 s juke
joint in Bentonia (pop. 500), keeps alive the "Bentonia
Blues," a style of Delta blues developed in die town. Cafe
owner Jimmy “Duck” Holmes has been called the last
practitioner of the musical style, marked by its special
guitar tuning, which creates a haunting sound.
NORTH CAROLINA —Ac 13, Anthony
Aldrich II of Charlotte sold 519.458 worth of popcorn for
the Mecklenburg County Council of the Boy Scouts of
America last year and was the organization’s top popcorn
salesman.
SOUTH CAROLlNA —Huntington Beach
State Park at Murrells Inlet (pop. 5,519) is one of the
top bird viewing spots in the state. About 300 spe
cies of birds have been sighted within the 2,500-acre
park.
TENNESSEE —With 4,945 residents, the state's
least populated county is Pickett County, and the
most populated is Shelby County, with 897,472.
VIRGINIA —Built in 1901 across the Staunton
River to connect the counties of Charlotte (pop.
12,472) and Halifax (pop. 37,355), the Clarkton
Bridge was closed to traffic in 1998 and headed for
demolition when citizens rallied and saved it. The
restored bridge reopened in 2005 as part of a recre
ational crail.
WEST VIRGINIA —Austin Hendrickson of
Huntington (pop. 51,475) rolled to a first-place finish
in the National Super Kids Classic race during the
70th All-American Soap Box Derby in July in Akron,
Ohio. Sixty-one youngsters, ages 8 to 18, participated
in the race for children with disabilities.!^-
