Field peas and oats planted together combine the benefits of a legume (peas) that fixes nitrogen with a grain (oats) that provides a lot of organic matter. The peas tend to grow right up the oat stalks. Plant this mixture in late summer. Sorghum-sudangrass, as the name suggests, is a cross be tween sorghum and sudangrass. Growing 5 to 12 feet tall, this hybrid produces large amounts of organic matter. This frpst tender plant can be kept under control by mowing it down to 6 inches tall when it reaches 3 feet.
