SURGE Frompage jB comeback 28-16. It wouldn’t be a Perry football game this year if there wasn’t some kind of come-from-behind effort. In this case, the Panthers fell behind by a touchdown, 14- 7, right at the start of the second half. Perry had two turnovers on special teams, including a fumbled kick off return to open the third quarter. Jackson’s Quirt McKibben recovered the fumble and returned it 20 yards to the Perry 10. McKibben then ran up the gut for the go ahead touchdown. But that was the end of the Red Devil scoring because the Perry offense controlled the football to the tune of 35 second-half plays to just 13 for Jackson. The Panthers had scoring drives of 76 and 97 yards and added another series of eight plays in the fourth quarter. In fact, Perry’s offense didn’t have a play go for negative yards until there was less than three minutes to play in the game. Overall, the Panthers racked up 300 total yards, 231 in the run ning game behind the block ing of Allen Wiswell, Clint threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jarrod Taylor. Revis, who also had nine rushes for 56 yards, kicked all three extra points. After Sherwood had scored in the third, Trent Usher got Westfield back on track with a nine-yard touchdown run. Kirk, Jay Golden, A. J. Foster and Johnnie Farms. Brandon Golden led the way with 110 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown while Jacorey Lane gained 69 yards on 12 rushes with a score. Quarterback Casey Hayward completed seven of 10 passes for 69 yards and touchdown to Trey Smith. The 6-4 Smith caught five of the throws for 56 yards. With Jackson leading 14- 7, Perry returned the kick off to its own 26-yard-line. The home team proceeded to run 10 straight positive rushing plays and gain four first downs all the way to the Jackson 18-yard-line. On 4th-and-5 from the 16, it was Smith catching a ball in the right flat for seven yards to keep the drive going. On 3rd-and-goal on the 5, the 15th play of the drive saw Hayward throw a fade to his right with Smith coming up with the catch for the tying touchdown. It took nearly nine minutes off the game clock to get those points, and when Bill Freeman added the PAT kick, there was 2:55 left in the third of a 14-14 game. Perry’s defense forced Jackson to punt on a three and-out, but the football took a roll for the visitors to the 3. Zach Crowe followed that up with a 55-yard touchdown run. Revis kicked the first of those extra points but the second missed. That put the Hornets up 34-6. Sherwood, which out-rushed Westfield 332-209 - but was out-passed 171-83 - then scored twice. ENI/Gary Harmon ENI/Gary Harmon ENI/Gary Harmon It was Smith and the Perry passing game that not only got the team out of the hole, but over the 50-yard-line. On 3rd-and-4, Smith made another quick catch on a corner route for first down on the 16. Up next, to start the fourth quarter, Hayward went for the deep ball, and Smith reached out for the catch of 39 yards on the Devil 45. Golden had four carries from that spot, and on his fourth he blasted off left tackle for a 22-yard touch down run. Freeman’s kick put Perry up 21-14 at 7:53 left to play. The 97-yard series only lasted 10 plays but took up nearly six min utes. Perry defenders Kered Whitest and Kaderius Felder sacked Jackson quarterback Christian Kelly and tackle Jecavesia Hayward stuffed a run play to force another three-and-out. The Panther offense drove from its 36 to the Jackson 14 in eight plays. But it lost yards on a penalty and 12- yard sack and punted to Jackson with 2:07 remain ing. The Red Devils managed their one and only first down of the half, but Kanorris Davis charged towards Kelly for another sack to set up SPORTS **s**£*' .b . v i l m.M. The first half, which ended with a 7-7 tie, was more about turnovers than scor ing plays. Though it wasn’t a turnover, Jackson made the first mistake of the game with its punting unit. Whether the Devils were trying some trickery on the snap, it didn’t work and the Panthers got to operate from the Jackson 42. Perry drove up to the 21, but with a holding call on fourth down Jackson got the football back on downs. Kanorris Davis and Tyler Rodgers had a strong first half to keep the visitors from any first downs on the first two tries. Perry’s offense had another chance to start in Jackson ground, and on 3rd and-8 from the 44 got a 25- yard burst by Golden. Three plays later form the 2, Lane put Perry on the board first at 2:34 of the first period. Freeman notched the PAT. Jackson started moving on offense, and when the second quarter began was faced with fourth down on the Panther 40. Perry fumbled the punt, however, with the Devils recovering on the 14. McKibben ran three plays to get lst-and-goal on the three, then Kelly did the play-action and dumped a touchdown pass to Mykemian Mann. The PAT kick tied the game at 9:20 until halftime. Perry’s Brandon Smith was among a group of defenders who forced a fum ble with 1:55 on the clock.
