HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL Northside overcomes miscues, beats Creekside By JOE SERSEY Journal Correspondent Northside survived four turnovers to defeat visit ing Creekside 14-0 in AAAA first-round playoff action at McConnell-Talbert Stadium Friday night. After both teams played a scoreless first half, Northside’s Tijuan Green took control of things, rush ing for 109 yards on 17 car ries in the second half, but touchdown runs by Kevyn Cooper and Joe Scott in the third and fourth quarters respectively capped Green’s efforts. Devon Pike kicked both extra points. After a dismal offensive first half, the Eagles’ offense came out of the field house fired up. “We told them just don’t turn the ball over,” said Northside head coach Conrad Nix. Nix credited his defense for setting up field position. “Our defense kept it down at their end of the field in the second half,” Nix said. “We didn’t want it down on our end. That happened to us in the first half.” Northside’s first scoring drive started on the Eagles’ 48 yard line after Creekside went three and out on its opening possession of the second half. The Eagles used five plays, including three touches by Green, to score. Green rushed twice for 32 yards and caught a 17-yard pass from Scott. Creekside managed only nine yards of total offense in the second half despite getting excellent field posi tion after Northside muffed a punt on its 27 that gave the Seminoles excellent field position. “They tried to help, us a little,” said Creekside head coach Kevin Whitely of Northside’s four turnovers. “If we’d have done our thing, it might have been a different game.” Unfortunately, the second half belonged to the Eagles. Creekside ran three plays for minus nine yards and had to punt. That wasn’t the only missed opportunity for the Seminoles in the game. Thanks to an interception late in the second quarter, Creekside managed to move the ball from Northside’s 39 to its four before a Seminoles delay penalty moved the ball back to the Northside 9. “All of our struggles on offense we hurt our selves,” Whitely said. Forced to go for a 20-yard field goal with 4.6 seconds left in the half, Creekside saw the kick miss wide left. Turnovers killed Northside in the first half. The Eagles opened the game with an 11 play drive that ended with a fumble at Creekside’s one yard line.
