concentration on what was
going on with his quarter
back.
“I just found an open spot
and put it in the end zone,”
he said.
The Panther defense fol
lowed that play with the first
of two pass interceptions, the
first coming from Tourris
Leary in the opposite end
zone. Leary was instrumen
tal in another interception
as the first half was nearing
a close.
LaGrange quarterback
Rodney Tolbert went for a
deep ball from his own 39
only to see Leary tip the ball
away from a visiting receiver
in coverage. Hayward was
also in that vicinity, leaped
for the catch, and made
a dash past everyone in a
white jersey for an 85-yard
touchdown return.
For the game, Hayward
was 8-for-17 passing for 97
yards and the touchdown
in addition to running the
ball 22 times for 101 yards.
Felder had five catches for
70 yards while Jacorey Lane
rushed for 76 yards, includ
ing a 33-yard second-half
touchdown.
Bill Freeman provided a
not-often-seen weapon this
football season as he made
two field goals in the 30-to
-40 yard range. He also made
good on a 35-yard PAT kick
on the interception return
when Perry was flagged
afterwards 15 yards.
Perry controlled the con
test from the outset, not only
with a defense that didn’t
allow but one first down in
seven LaGrange plays of
the first quarter, but with
that spread offense that was
more geared towards ball
control than big plays.
In seven first-down snaps
of the first half, the Panthers
averaged six yards a play.
They also converted three
3rd-and-ls plus one 4th-and
-1 for first downs.
The first Panther drive
started from the PH 20, and
10 plays later it was 4th

Ram defense saying their
players are big, strong and
fast. He said Worth has a
good linebacker (No. 42), and
that the main thing to look
out for is the team speed.
But, in looking at match
ups with Perry and its
spread offense, Scott said the
Rams come from a region
that doesn’t have anyone
who does what the Panthers
do. He said, though, that it
doesn’t give his club any real
advantage.
“We just have to take
advantage of our opportuni
ties, take what the defense
gives us,” said Scott. “We
can’t have any turnovers or
foolish penalties. We have to
make sure we execute.”
Turnovers were not a prob
lem - because there were
none - when the Panthers
toppled LaGrange in the first
round. The execution was
also there, especially early,
that gave Perry four short
third-down opportunities.

and-8 on the Granger 16.
Freeman tried and made a
33-yard field goal for the
3-0 lead at 4:45 of the first
quarter.
There were times when
Hayward didn’t have to
scramble as Perry’s offen
sive front gave him plenty
of time to find Trey Smith
on a roll-out and gain 13
yards on 2nd-and-14 in the
second period. That was the
key play of the Hayward-to-
Felder touchdown series that
lasted 13 plays and started
at the Panther 34.
LaGrange’s Ocie Salter
had his team’s biggest gain
of the night with a 63-yard
run to the Panther 13 (a play
that had a flag on the field
but later waved off).
Leary had his intercep
tion on third down when
the visitors went with 6-4
sophomore Jamius Gunsby
at quarterback.
Perry’s 17-0 lead stood at
halftime as Pat Simmions
of LaGrange missed for the
first time on a field goal kick
all season as time ran out.
Kanorris Davis chased
down the LaGrange punter
after a bad snap to set up
the Panther offense on the
Granger 14. Perry would lose
some yards and had a break
by recovering a dropped
backwards pass on the 20.
But Freeman notched his
second field goal, this one of
37 yards, for a 20-0 Panther
lead at 5:18 of the third
quarter.
J.R. Lasseter had a punt
roll to the 8-yard-line late
in the period, but LaGrange
worked out of the hole with
two third-down conversions
up to the 44. On a third
down play from the PH 36,
Davis knocked the football
away from Dez Lovett and
Tyler Rogers recovered on
the 34.
After Hayward’s 28-yard
run into Granger ground,
Lane burst through open
space to score, and with
Freeman’s final PAT kick
Perry was up 27-0 (7:48).
Lovett scored the lone
LaGrange touchdown on a
two-yard run at the end of
an eight-play, 70-yard drive.
“A lot of people will look at
our (spread) offense, but it’s
still about running the foot
ball,” said Scott, whose team
has more than 400 yards on
the ground the last two out
ings, complimented by about
160 yards through the air.
It’s taken time off the clock
and given Perry the edge in
field position.
It also helps that the
Panther special teams are
getting stronger with well
placed kickoffs and punts.
Bill Freeman made two field
goals of more than 30 yards
to go with a 35-yard PAT in
the LaGrange game.
“It’s his senior year,
and he’s just gotten better
throughout the year,” said
Scott.
And there’s . Casey
Hayward’s amazing play at
quarterback with 22 total
touchdowns (17 rushing, 15
passing) and 2,000 yards plus
total offense. He continues to
leave jaws dropped all over
the stadium as he did last
week when he turned a near
disastrous situation into a
touchdown pass to Akeen
Felder.
“He did a great job to
stay alive,” said Scott about
Hayward’s scramble in the
second quarter. “And it was

a great catch on the route by

the zone coverage and make

Yes, not only are these
Perry skill players making
people miss, but also they
aren’t going down easily.
Scott said that goes back to
the practice field where the
offensive staff preaches get
ting yards after contact.
“We impress upon them
that once they get in a colli
sion, they need to keep their
feet moving and secure the
football,” he said.
The more the offense is on
the field, the less pressure is
put on the defense. For the
first nine games, Perry gave
up an average of 27.3 points
per game. The last two foes
combined only got 21 com
bined, some of that due to
