A quilt with a story 4-H, hospice workers team op to create a lasting legacy By CHARLOTTE PERKINS Journal Staff Writer Ask Jean Rea about the important influences on her life, and there’s one thing you can count on. She’ll tell you about the 4-H club she belonged to growing up poor in Louisiana, and how much she gained from the club. “That’s where I learned to set goals,” she says. It’s also where she learned to show livestock and to “put up” food of every kind, which led to a lifetime love of can ning, pickling and baking, and even cookbook compil ing and food writing. (You can read Jean Rea’s recipe for Old-Fashioned Banana Pudding on Page IB). Along the way to 4-H excellence, the young girl won over 300 ribbons - some blue, some red, some yellow, some white - and treasured them all.
