Divorce did not typically
reduce symptoms of depres
sion or raise self-esteem.
Even unhappy spouses who
had divorced and remarried
were no happier on average
than those who stayed mar
ried. “Staying married is not
just for the children’s sake
... but results like these sug
gest the benefits of divorce
have been oversold,” said
Waite.
Why doesn’t divorce typi
cally make adults happier?
The authors of the study
suggest that divorcing cou
ples may simply trade one
set of problems for another,
over which they have little
control. These include the
response of one’s spouse to
divorce; the reactions of chil
dren; potential disappoint
ments and aggravation in
custody, child support, and
visitation orders; new finan
cial or health stresses for
one or both parents; and
new relationships or mar
riages with problems of their
own.
Faulty presupposition:
If I’m unhappy in my mar
riage, my children may do
better if I divorce, because
they’ll do better in life if I
am not so unhappy.
The truth: Children actu
ally benefit from, and are
comforted by, the fact - not
quality - of your marriage.
The first thing to under
stand is that less than one
third of divorces occur in
high-conflict marriages.
And, most parents do not
suddenly start getting along
after divorce - in fact, most
have more conflict following
divorce than before.

is a high level of marital
discord, divorce (especially a
quick one) does not benefit
children. Research shows
that behavioral and psy
chological problems do not
improve for children whose
parents divorced. In fact, the
problems are no less than
those children whose parents
remained together. Even in
high conflict households,
children show a notable
increase in behavioral and
psychological problems fol
lowing divorce. Marital dis
cord is not a statistically sig
nificant factor in predicting
the psychological well-being
of children on into adult
hood. Divorce, however, is.
Of course there is an impor
tant exception here—vio
lence and abuse. Obviously
a spouse and/or child must
not remain in a dangerous
home. It is always best for
them to protect themselves
from these terrible circum
stances.
I don’t believe that most
people proceed with divorce
lightly. Sometime folks are
in pain and other times
they’ve just drifted apart.
But I do believe that most of
us are ill-informed when it
comes to the issue of hope.
Too often we fail to reach
out and grab the hope that
awaits us and our children
- the hope of a rewarding
marriage if we’ll stick with
our spouse and weather the
storms.

Today’s times can truly be

The alcohol selling on

case.
There should be a city

the following categories.
• No restrictions on alco

a week.
• Alcohol sales on Sunday
at restaurants in addition to
established times.
• No alcohol sold at any

I voted for the first time in
the 1960 elections. We’ve
had some sorry ones in the
past, no doubt, but usually
there would be one or two

they’re ALL objectionable,

suspect the latter.
If the churches do not like
selling or drinking alcohol on
Sundays, they should avoid
it, but let others who do
not fall under the churches’
control manage their own
affairs and lives.
If the churches want to
participate in the local gov
ernments, let them pay their
share of taxes.
Today the taxpayers are
subsidizing religion to the
tune of millions of dollars.
The professional cleric
should butt-out and stop
meddling in governmental
business.
What is the source of the
politicians’ irrational fear?
Could it be that religious
fog mentioned previously?
Or do their inflated egos
cause them to believe that
allowing the ordinary people
to decide this issue would
usurp their power over
them.
Or perhaps they have
duped themselves into
believing they were elected
emperors.

But everyone is worried
about television. WHY?
Who cares if you can view
Oprah in 1080 i? I would
rather have the ability to
drive 234 MPG in a one-liter
engine car.
The max speed this car
can attain is about 75 MPH.
but you can get over 200
MPG. In the next few years,
we wilf be paying over $6 a
gallon of gas.
It just in my opinion that
we need to worry about
what is more important.
And I do not think broad

important.
