Green, Eagles’ defense turns back Evans
Next up: Rome in quarterfinals
By JOE SERSEY

Tijuan Green rushed for
111 yards and two touch
downs on 15 carries in the
first half of Northside’s 26-0
victory over Evans Friday
night at McConnell-Talbert
Stadium to advance to the
next round of the AAAA
football playoffs.
He finished the night with
157 yards on 22 carries.
Devon Pike kicked two
field goals in the second half
of 23 and 29 yards, and Joe
Scott added a touchdown to
the mix, also in the second
half.
Meanwhile, Northside’s
defense held Evans score
less, recovering two fumbles
and grabbing two intercep
tions in the game.

Golden a key in Panthers' success
By MATTHEW BROWN

If there is a stat kept by
football coaches for most
blocks thrown by a run
ning back, Perry High foot
ball senior Brandon Golden
could certainly be close to a
school record.
Golden, in his role as a
fullback, has blocked for the
likes of Montay West, Kenny
Davis, Casey Hayward and
Jacorey Lane for the last
three years in the Panther
backfield. For two years, he
did it in a wishbone offense,
but all of that changed in
2007 as Perry switched to
a spread set. That’s not the
only thing that changed for
Panther football as a win
ning attitude developed and
has carried the program to
the GHSA Class AAA Elite
8.
Golden not only is a wit
ness to the change, but a
major reason for it.
“He’s matured mentally as
much as he has physically,”
said Perry head coach Andy
Scott. “Kids like him who
are extremely hard workers,
that have a great home life
with a mom and dad who
direct him, you can really
tell the difference as a foot
ball coach.”
Are there times, though,
when Golden misses that old

Perry rolls past
Worth County
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
When the Perry High
School football Panthers
found a new script for win
ning football games, the
results have meant unprec
edented success in the state
playoffs.
Following the same pat
tern of ball control, lim
ited turnovers and superior
kicking, Perry upended the

28-6 Friday in Class AAA
second-round action held
at Herb St. John Stadium.
Now the Panthers, winners
of seven in a row, move
on to the quarterfinals and
will play on the road for
the first time in the post
season. The destination is
Gainesville, and the oppo
nent is undefeated and No.
3-ranked North Hall.
The old Perry script from
the 2007 season was filled
with high-scoring affairs,
some of which the Panthers
had to win within the last
one or two minutes of
regulation. But now, head
coach Andy Scott’s defense
is only giving up points in
“too little, too late” situ
ations for the opposition.
That was the case in the
venue.
Only Gayton said he believed the title
should have gone to Roberts as Gayton
weighed in at 73.7 kg.
“Technically he won by weighing less
than 1 kg less than me,” Gayton said.
As it turned out, he was only half right.
The title isn’t shared anymore but that’s
because it now belongs solely to Gayton.
Come to find out, he explained

first-round 27-7 home win
against LaGrange. In the
Worth County game, Perry
had a 28-0 lead only to lose
the shutout as the Rams
scored with 1:33 remain
ing.
Senior quarterback
Casey Hayward led a bal
anced offensive approach
by completing eight of 12
passes for 114 yards and
two touchdowns. Both of
the scoring throws came
in the fourth quarter. The
Panthers had 116 yards
rushing, and the offense
- for the second game in
a row - won the battle of
giveaway/takeaway with
only one turnover (none in
the previous game).
The scouting report from
Scott on Worth County
coming into the game said
the Rams scored 100 total
points in their last two
games with a dominating
running game. That rush
ing attack didn’t show up
to the stadium, however,
as the visitors netted just
three yards on the ground
by halftime, 14 by the start
of the fourth quarter and
45 when the game ended.
