I thought it would be fairly simple and only take a moment. Wrong! Did you know that there are three Mount Vernon’s in Georgia alone? The website listed the counties that the three Mount Vernons were in. Well, that didn’t help me a bit, because I didn’t even know there were three Mount Vernons in Georgia and I certainly didn’t know what counties they were in. I knew the general direction that I needed to be going, so after much research and annoyance, I ruled out two of the Mount Vernons. I finally had the correct Mount Vernon to get directions to. I requested the driving directions and was dismayed to read that Mount Vernon is 63 miles It’s Christmas tree trivia time Tim Lewis Garden Columnist In our pursuit of the per fect In our pursuit of the per fect In our In ouu- Christmas tree a few yea rs ago, my wife and I learned quite a bit about some of the types and varieties of trees available. I studied the directions, referred to my trusty atlas, and discovered I could get to Mount Vernon much quicker going another route. At this point, it took so long to get the directions that I am running late and will have to speed if I want to get there on time. This experience left me realizing that old fashion common sense is better than high tech know-how, most of the time. Those fancy navigation al systems are on a lot of Christmas lists this year, but they are going to be difficult to use in Georgia. Remember, this state has three Mount Vernons in it and the city of Atlanta has over 40 streets named Peachtree. Also, in Georgia, we have missing street signs and even more unmarked roads, especially the dirt ones. Now don’t get me wrong, I love Georgia’s highways and byways, dirt roads and all. I even live on a dirt road. It’s just going to be difficult to get directions from a little talking box where the roads aren’t named or marked. We Southerners would rather use landmarks when interesting facts about I’ll bet you didn’t know that: * Christmas trees have been sold commercially in the United States since about 1850. * California, Oregon, Michigan, Washington, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina are the top Christmas tree producing states. * ' There are some 15,000 Christmas tree growers in North America. Don’t turn there, but keep going until you see the abandoned motel. Then, make a left, go ‘bout two more miles, turn right just past the junkyard and you’re there. If you get to the water tower, then turn around, you’ve gone too far.” See what I mean. Those little boxes aren’t going to give you the quality directions you’re going to get from a true Southerner. You’re going to miss out on some very rich and reward ing experiences. So, this year for Christmas you might want to ask for a crock pot instead. You’ll get a lot more use out of it.
