4B WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2007 Eagles dominate Rome, head back to the Dome ByJOESERSEY Journal Correspondent Joe Scott had probably his best game passing since he took over for Marques Ivory, and Tijuan Green rushed for 209 yards on 25 car ries to set a new Northside career rushing record. Those offensive efforts combined with the Eagles’ solid-wall defense helped them advance to the Georgia Dome for the semifinal round of the AAAA football playoffs. Northside defeated Rome 30-0 Friday night at McConnell-Talbert Stadium. Scott passed for 151 yards completing nine of 15 pass es. Northside’s victory came despite nine penalties for 85 yards, including seven pen alties in the first half that totaled 65 yards. Green put the Eagles on the board after a one-yard run in Northside’s first pos session of the game. His touchdown finished off an 80-yard, 15-play drive that was helped by a fourth and 27 pass interference call that gave the Eagles first down on Rome’s 17. The Wolves entered the game against undefeated Northside averaging more than 33 points a game. Their sole penalty in the first half cost them, but Northside’s defense added to Rome’s woes, stifling any offensive production afford ed them. The Wolves never got clos er than Northside’s 22-yard line in the second quarter. Northside led 7-0 after the first quarter and added another touchdown in the second to take a 14-0 lead into the halftime break. That score came courte sy of a Nick Bass 66-yard pass reception from Scott. —in;. —| ■P:' | JgPlff ENI/Gary Harmon Nick Bass heads down the sideline after catching a pass. ■ .-■ c c JiBBIiIPIB®S 4! ~ / Mk. i ' iMI A ' ■.'*&,'i< i ■''■ ,<s 'i |fWk , *'V‘- %ap<%£ j"W| , $ "■■;■ i jH| Jjf £% i *''L ' y *~ 1 II —Bn" 1 _i-»l_ __3 ENI/Gary Harmon Northside Head Coach Conrad Nix urges the squad on. Northside was facing sec ond and 17 on its own 34 yard line after two consecu tive holding calls. Scott hit Bass at Rome’s 25 and Bass eluded his cover man for a clear lane to the Wolves’ end zone. Scott hooked up with Bass again during Northside’s opening possession of the second half. Holding calls inspired the pass/catch duo because Scott’s 29-yard touchdown toss to Bass came immediately after the Eagles’ fourth holding pen alty of the game. After Devon Pike’s third kick for the extra point, the Eagles led 21-0. Rome tried everything, including a fake punt, to get on the scoreboard, but the Eagles’ defense stood fast. The Wolves finished the game with only 72 total yards and six first downs. Northside defensive backs Darius McGee and Jordan Couillard each grabbed interceptions in the second half. Northside also took advan tage of Rome miscues. When the Wolves were forced to punt late in the third quarter, the snap sailed over the punter’s head, and Couillard was so close to the punter when he grabbed the ball that he raced to his end zone to take the safety rather than give the Eagles the ball on Rome’s 10-yard line. Northside led 23-0 going into the fourth quarter. The Eagles didn’t need any penalties to inspire them for their final touch down of the game. Green carried the ball all four plays of the final scor ing drive, and his 54-yard run set up his second score of the game, a two-yard plunge to give the Eagles their 30-0 margin.
