Westfield girls, boys sweep Mount de Sales
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
Freshman James Wurstff,
theleadingscorerfor Westfield
basketball Saturday at hone,
made the game-winningplay
as he fell on a loose bal’ and
let time run out on the visit
ing Mt. de Sales Cavaliers.
The Hornets, despile just
scoring 11 points in the sec
ond half, held on for a 39-38
win at home in the first boys
contest for Westfield of the
2007-2008 season.
The Hornets were lead
ing by eight, 39-31, with
about three minutes left in
regulation. The Cavs, which
struggled from the foul line
all game, made one of two
attempts at the line to pull
within four with 1:02 remain
ing. Westfield, after a fine
first-half of foul shooting,
missed a one-and-one front
end at the 52-second mark
and another front end with
10 seconds to play.
Mt. de Sales had cut
Westfield’s lead to one with
18 seconds to go as a 3-point
attempt bounced on the rim
and fell through the net.
With a chance to win the
game in the last 10 ticks, the
visitors lost control of the
basketball. Wurster kept it
from going out of bounds and
stayed with it on the floor as
time expired.
Wurster came off the
Hornet bench early when
starting junior center Matt
Amrit got into immediate
foul trouble. Wurster would

Irish. But that storied program
fell on hard times with the
worst winless start in school
history. Alas, Northside’s
Green doesn’t feel like wear
ing a Golden Dome anytime
soon.
“I guess they’ll have to
regroup and try again next
year,” he said, offering no
solutions for coach Charlie
Weis. “I don’t know.”
Green is still a high school
student, -a kid at heart, and
that means a love of fiction
al characters. So who is his
favorite: Green Arrow, Green
Lantern, the Green Hornet,
the Jolly Green Giant?
Actually, Tijuan picked one
recently portrayed on the big
screen, Spider-man nemesis
the Green Goblin.
One cannot forget every
child’s favorite Green crea
ture, Kermit the Frog. “He’s
pretty famous, too,” said
Green. Both Kermit and the
late Ray Charles recorded a
song called, “It’s Not Easy
Being Green.” So we have to
ask our football player, ‘is it
easy being Green?”
“It’s just your name,” said
Tijuan. “You represent your
family. Everybody has a last
name, so everybody gets
treated equally.”
Hold on now. One cannot
ignore a few of the negative
stereotypes associated with
being Green. First of all, if
you are one without a lot
of experience in your chosen
field, you are labeled a ‘green
horn.’
“I have experience, so they
can’t call me a greenhorn,”
said Green about his foot
ball standing in high school,
though he admits that will
change once he goes to col
lege. So then you have to
wonder if Green is jealous all
the time, ‘green with envy as
the saying goes.’ It’s the ‘little
green monster’ in everyone,
not the big Green Monster at
go on to score 10 points, six
coming in the opening quar
ter. He put Westfield ahead
for the first time with a post
move, and his team ended
the period leading 12-9.
The Hornets never trailed
after the rest of the game.
Wurster made another move
in the post to score on a pass
from guard Casey Young, and
an open 3-pointer by Riley
Sims from a corner put the
home team up eight, 22-
14. Both Young and John
Peake scored on offensive
rebounds, and Joel Re vis
stole an inbounds pass to
score towards the end of the
half.
Westfield, with 9-of-15
shooting at the line, led after
the first half 28-20. The
Cavaliers missed six free
throws in the second quarter
alone. The 6-4 Amrit was
back on the floor for the sec
ond half and blocked about
five shots. Wurster added
an assist to his game with
a pass inside to Peake, and
Amrit scored on an inbound
play late in the third. The
Hornets were ahead by nine
going into the fourth 35-26.
Westfield’s offense was
more focused on ball con
trol and running clock in the
second half, and there were
several hustle plays and pos
session saves, but only one
made field goal in the fourth
period. The Hornets were
also just 2-of-6 at the line in
the last eight minutes.
Peake finished with seven
a Boston baseball park.
Tijuan denies any such feel
ings that gnaw at him every
day. After all, he does have
the state title and hasn’t dealt
with a loss on the football
field in these last two years.
“I have nothing to be jeal
ous about,” he said.
And, there is that street that
runs in front of the Northside
campus. So how did Tijuan
feel when this stretch of road
was dubbed Green Street?
“When I was little, I used to
ride on the street all the time,”
he said. “I was like ‘that’s my
street.’ That’s Green Street.
That’s what my mom used
to say all the time. ‘That’s
our street.’ She used to have
me thinking that. But when
I grew up it was just another
street with our last name.”
It wasn’t just a street sign,
but a sign of things to come,
that on this road Green would
develop his talents as a foot
ball player.

Hanna Jones had 16 of
her 18 points in the second
half as the Westfield girls
basketball team went on an
decisive 11-0 run in the third
quarter to take a home win
against the Mt. de Sales girls
Saturday. The Lady Hornets
had lost to the Lady Cavs 11
days before in Macon, but
this was not only the first
win for Westfield’s girls this
season, but also the first win
against MDS since the 2002
season.
The game had several
streaks, including an opening
7-0 run for Westfield high
lighted by a comer 3-pointer
for Mallory Eubanks. While
that run took about three
minutes, MDS tied the game
7-7 in less than two minutes
with a run sparked by the
reserves. Caroline Pfohl got
active inside with consecutive
baskets to put the home club
ahead 14-9 after the quarter.
Junior point guard Mason
Moreland scored on penetra
tion and a steal in the second
quarter, Westfield leading 21-
13. But again it was MDS
going on a 5-1 run to close
out the half and trail 22-18.
The Lady Hornets, after
giving up four points on turn
overs, didn’t score in the third
quarter until the 5:15 mark.
The Lady Cavs had already
taken the lead, though, and
with four in a row by reserve
There’s another road the
Eagles will be traveling soon,
a familiar road in more ways
than one. It’s Northside
Drive, a major highway in
Atlanta that runs alongside
the Georgia Dome. In that
Dome, Green will be looking
across the field at Tucker High
safety Jamoris Slaughter,
who happens to be the top
rated safety in the state and is
committed to sign with those
Notre Dame Irish.
“We’re just going to be
ready to play Friday,” said
Green, not sending any spe
cial message to any one player.
“On TV in front of everybody.
We’re going to be ready to win
and hopefully bring another
state championship here.”
Green is sure to handle the
football plenty of times, and
he can’t wait to get on that
