Gilmour says that he hopes

Gilmour noted that the esti
mated cost is around $4.5
million, most of of which will
come from the 2002 Special
Local Option Sales Tax, with
some state and federal funds
as well. Delays, he said,
were initially due to the
need to obtain funds, and
then to requirements for
environmental studies and
more public hearings.

release reads, is to enrich the
transportation experience of
Georgians through specific
types of enhancement proj
ects. The kinds of projects
funded by the TE program
include multi-use facilities
such as walking and biking
trails and paths; streetscap
ing and landscaping projects
in cities and towns; historic
preservation of transporta
tion-related facilities like
railroad depots; and scenic

This year, the Georgia
DOT received a total of 285
eligible applications repre
senting combined requests
for more than $176 million
in federal funds from all 13
congressional districts. In
this selection round, $54.6
million in federal funds are
available for Fiscal Years
2008 and 2009 for distribu
tion statewide.
Up to 80 percent of the
funds being used for these
projects have been provid
ed by the Federal Highway
Administration, with the
local government funding
the remainder of the total
project cost.
The local government
project sponsor is respon
sible for implementing the
TE project and obtaining
the work done there;

relies on an extensive in
house technical review
and the Transportation
Enhancement Advisory
Panel, which was formed in
1992.
The advisory panel group
of professionals, represent
ing statewide expertise in
the various TE project cate
gories, evaluated each appli
cation and forwarded its rec
ommendations to the State
Transportation Board for
final selection of the funded
projects.
