Saturday Tuesday, December 8-11, 2007 Gazebo a goner developers to provide new one By CHARLOTTE PERKINS Journal Staff Writer The much-discussed gazebo at the corner of Ball and Commerce Street seems likely to be demolished. The developers who are building the new Walgreen’s drug store at that site had promised to keep the big oak tree at the corner in place, and to relocate the gazebo to another part of Downtown Perry. However, according William Jackson, speaking for the See GAZEBO, page ioA This week in HHJ history: 50 years ago: “Oh! It’s Good to Be in Georgia.” Thus wrote and sang Evelyn Hunt of Perry, a teacher in the Warner Robins schools, and thus printed a company in New York where she had it copyrighted. Perhaps some in the community can remember this as it the local radio stationed was reported as saying it would play it as often as possible. And one sidenote: Hunt also paid a company to put a sketch representing Georgia on the front cover of the music sheet but she said it looked too much like Florida, so she sketched her own. Also, the Perry Court, 16 cottages set among cypress, gum, sycamore and other trees, and reportedly known around the world as a tourist attraction, expands a bit - six rooms - to bring its total to 56. 30 years ago: Perry’s football team, after having its best season since 1970 when it went 8-2 - during this year it was 7-3 - releases its final stats. It ends up leading the conference in rushing (2,156 yards total), coming in last in pass ing and is third overall in defense. It also has the league’s leading rusher in John Ridley and interception leader in Alvin Boone. 20 years ago: Two teen-agers are arrested - two others that were with them were let go - following a high-speed chase and subsequent arrest that exceeded 115 mph in a stolen car. The 16-year-old made off with the car at a dealership, pretending to be interested in buying it. Perry police got a whiff of their location when a local gas station called in to report they drove off without paying for gas. They fled after wrecking at an 1-75 roadblock but didn’t get far. In other news, Retired Brig. Gen. Daniel “Dan" Bullard warns - during a speech for the National Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution's Christmas dinner - “we should be wary” of a proposed U.S./Soviet Union Missile Reduction Treaty. A surprise attack by Soviet forces, he says, would “make Hitler's blitzkreig look like ‘Ned reading his first book'” (whatever that means). - Compiled by Don Moncrlef ■HH total attendance of 1,880,211 at four fairs.
