Stotts scored off a steal in the opening quarter, but Perry didn’t get a field goal until Akeen Felder put back a rebound. Hardy didn’t start any of the football play ers but worked them in three minutes into the contest. As the Bears were called for two offensive fouls in the period, Hubbard, Walker and Hayward all penetrated to the goal to get baskets and put the visiting team, up 13- 9. Perry opened the second quarter with three turnovers in a row. Houston County scored off two of those mis takes, Jarrid Nunn using a post move to tie the game 13-13. The Panthers quick ly turned the takeaway advantage around, and with Walker’s three-point play after a steal they were ahead 18-13. Kameron Felder spot ted himself on the right' cor ner and put through a 3- pointer with 3:45 until half time. Houston County recovered to get some late turnovers and a 3-pointer from Josh Gregory with a minute to go. Nunn sank two free throws, helping the Bears trail by just four, 32-27, at the break. Houston center Jaloni Phillips blocked two shots in the first half. It was Jones, though, who gave a major defensive show ing for Perry in the second half with three blocks. West Laurens, a current 4-AAA member, was placed 87-71. Northside led by one, 19-18, after a quarter, but was out-scored 29-10 in the second. Both put 19 on the scoreboard in the third, so the score was 63-48 heading down the stretch. HOUSTON COUNTY GIRLS 45, PERRY 29 With a double-double coming from senior Tonia Williams, the Houston County High girls basketball team won for the first time in the new season Tuesday at home. The Perry Lady Panthers, which fell to 0-2, were trailing by just two in the second quarter when the home Lady Bears went on a decisive 13-3 run. Williams, signed to play for the University of South Carolina, had 23 points and 13 rebounds along with six assists. Sophomore Kourtny Thomas had 10 points and five rebounds while leading the team in steals with four. Junior Alexis Hewitt chipped in eight. For Perry, Brianna Brown had nine points and Kim Burgess eight. Burgess also had three steals and a pair in Region 3-AAA with Washington County, Baldwin, Burke County and Liberty County. The new Region 4- AAA will have nine mem bers in 2008-2009: Eagle’s Landing, Jackson, Mary Persons, Rutland (Macon), South Atlanta, Southside- Atlanta, Spalding, Woodland (Stockbridge) and Woodward Academy. A 10th school is joining the region in the fall of 2009, that being Locust Grove in Henry County. “It’s an opportunity for our program to play some quality opponents,” said Scott about 1-AAA. “Before I came here, I was an assistant at Coffee County High, and everybody called (Region 1- AAAAA) the ‘SEC of Georgia high schools.’” You could call 1-AAA the ‘Little SEC.’” Scott said this is the kind of It took an extra quarter, in which the visitors out-scored their guests, the Demonettes, 14-7, in this one. Warner Robins trailed 18-15 after one. That was the case after two quarters, as well, as both put up seven points. The Lady Bears opened the game with an 8-0 run with Williams both taking two steals in for four points and throwing a long assist to fel low senior Janesa Johnson. Brown ran the fast break and passed off to Burgess on a wing for Perry’s first score. The visiting Panthers gained some confidence towards the end of the quar ter as Brown hit a 3-pointer and Lay Lay Rountree scored off a steal in the final min ute. It was a 10-7 game after the period and 10-8 not soon after the second began. But it was all Houston County and Williams from there. She had a transition assist to Jasmine Bowman and a tip-in score to make it 16-8. A Rountree 3-point er snapped a 6-0 run, but Hewitt’s three-point play on an offensive stick-back start ed the home club on a 7-0 spurt. Williams, from the top of the key, hit Thomas moving on the baseline for two at the end of the run. Prior to the half, Farr ah Lewis earned an assist to Williams on penetra tion. Perry has been in Region 4-AAA since the 2002-2003 year. Before that, it was in 1-AAA with Fitzgerald, Thomasville, Dodge County, Dublin and Westover. The Panthers went 1-9 in football in 2001, which was Scott’s first season as assistant coach. That other ‘SEC’ region, 1-AAAAA, has a new mem ber: Northside High. The Eagles join fellow county schools Warner Robins High and Houston County High in taking on Coffee, Colquitt County, Lowndes, Valdosta and Tift County. The last time Northside was a Class AAAAA school was in 2003-2004 when it joined Warner Robins in Region 2-AAAAA. SPORTS there was no such pattern as all of the aforementioned. They won 54-47 over the Trojans, thanks in part to Jared Fluellen’s 12 points and Kenny Fluellen’s 10. “We played a good first half,” said boys basketball Head Coach Chip Malone. “We didn’t execute the sec ond.” GISA Stratford girls 57, Westfield 34; Eagles 50, Hornets 44 Fresh off a sweep to open the year, Westfield hosted its second home game and then this time got swept.
