HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL UGA is a winner on, off the football field Okay, Bulldog N ation, let’s all get a paper bag and breath into it very s-l-o-w-l-y. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Feel bet ter? Good. Now turn off the whine machine, and let’s talk. We need to accept the fact that the Dick Yarbrough Columnist yarb24oo@bellsouth.net University of Georgia is not playing for the BCS National Football Championship in January. Maybe we got hosed, but the issue has been settled and it isn’t going to change. Had we beaten the Evil Genius and Tennessee dur ing the regular season, we Meet the GOP's border control cross-dressers Every Democrat run ning for president thinks anti-illegal immigration activists are all racists and xenophobes. Do we really need a Republican nominee for president who thinks the same way? Breakout GOP can did a t e Mike Huckabee, the soft on-border control former Michelle Malkin Columnist malkin@comcast.net governor of Arkansas, scored a jaw-dropping endorsement Tuesday from Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project. Despite a long gubernatorial record oppos ing employer sanctions and pushing tax-subsidized ille gal alien education benefits, Huckabee won Gilchrist’s support by unveiling a last minute, tough-sounding homeland security plan. Trouble is, Huckabee has downright and longstanding contempt for his new bedfel lows of convenience. Just two years ago, Huckabee appeared before the open-borders Hispanic group, The League of United Latin American Citizens, preaching an open-door poli cy. According to the Arkansas News Bureau, Huckabee also criticized state legislation requiring proof of citizen ship to register to vote and enhanced reporting of illegal aliens as un-Christian, un- American, irresponsible and anti-life - not to mention “inflammatory,” “race-bait ing” and “demagoguery.” Just last year, Huckabee lambasted opponents of the bipartisan shamnesty bill providing a mass pardon cef results! Besides, the claims we make about deserving a title shot could be made by any number of other schools, including the one we will face in the Sugar Bowl, the undefeated University of Hawaii. As for me, I have no way of know ing who should be playing in the championship game because understanding the screwy BCS system is akin to deciphering Assyrian hieroglyphics. So, let’s get things in perspective. First, going to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on New Year’s Day isn’t exactly the worst thing that ever happened on God’s Green Earth. We could be headed to the Pine Beetle Infestation Dot Com Bowl in East Boola-Boola, Idaho, to do battle with the to illegal aliens as “driven by racism or nativism.” He called strict immigration enforcement - the kind he now supports - “sheer folly” in his campaign-timed book released earlier this year. He actively invited the Mexican government to establish a consulate in Arkansas - giving its office a $1 per year special office space rate - so that its foreign officials could start dispens ing security-undermining matricula consular ID cards to illegal aliens for banking and employment purposes. And he’s not only for gov ernment in-state illegal alien discounts, he’s for expand ing them far beyond what the federal DREAM Act pro posed. But now that he needs to establish his border con trol bona sides, Huckabee is all honey. It’s Gilchrist and those who allow themselves to be snowed by Huckabee’s cyni cal conversion who’ll be sorry and deep in apology debt, I guarantee you. Huckabee showed his true colors at the Univision Spanish-language debate over the weekend when he pandered to the crowd by lamenting “racial Give the Gift of Dance to your Special Child this Holiday! It should be a whale of a game. And don’t give me the “we have-nothing-to-gain-and- everything-to-lose” malar key. If we only play people when we have something to gain, we ought not to be playing at all. Quality teams don’t think that way, and the Bulldogs are a quality team. Third, there is not going to be a playoff in NCAA Division 1-A (or whatever they call it these days) in our lifetime, so the best way to ensure a slot in the BCS championship game is profiling” of immigrants - while remaining silent about catch-and-release policies that fail to detain criminal aliens who go on to commit more heinous crimes because politically correct politi cians and police chiefs are more concerned with being accused of “racial profiling” than protecting the public. Huckabee isn’t the only shameless border control cross-dresser in the GOP field, of course. Rudy “I sup ported sanctuary policies before I was against them, but my sanctuary policy wasn’t really a sanctuary policy, anyway” Giuliani now quotes “the advice of a great man, Father Hesburgh, who said, ‘We must close the back door of illegal immigra tion in order to preserve the front door of legal immigra tion.’” In an interview with Washington Examiner report er and author Bill Sammon, Giuliani now says he really, truly would have deported 400,000 illegal aliens in New York if he could have. Sometimes, as the Auburn people will tell you, even that is not enough. Remember, Auburn was undefeated in 2004 and still got snubbed by the BCS. But most important ly, remember why the University of Georgia exists. It is not to play football, even though we do a pretty good job of that. It is first and fore most an educational institu tion and a damned fine one. If you want to expend energy on something having to do with the University of Georgia, I recommend that you forget being disrespect ed by the BCS nabobs and the talking heads on ESPN and get excited about what is happening academically in Athens. Maybe you haven’t noticed, but it is getting hard as the dickens to get into immigration laws. Never mind that he was openly inviting illegal aliens into his open-borders safe harbors. Reports Sammon: “Some of the hardest-working and most productive people in this city are undocumented aliens,” the mayor said at a 1994 press conference. “If you come here and you work hard and you happen to be in an undocumented status, you’re one of the people who we want in this city. You’re somebody that we want to protect, and we want you to get out from under what is often a life of being like a fugitive, which is really unfair.” Bringing up the false convert rear is Sen. John McCain. Earlier this 'year, he was the most vocal critic of grass-roots conservatives who mobilized against the amnesty bill. The pri vate schools in the state that used to turn up their noses at the University of Georgia now have kids clamoring to get into UGA and a lot of them can’t. The SATs for this year’s freshman class is 1282 and climbs every year. The current GPA for the freshman class is 3.67. This is not your granddaddy’s party school. The university recent ly announced two Rhodes Scholars, the only public university in the nation to do so. The other schools with two Rhodes Scholars this year include Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, St. Olaf and Columbia. That’s pretty good company for UGA to be keeping. That makes 21 Rhodes Scholars for us, six since 1996. By the way, our two honorees are Deep J. Shah ofDuluth and Katherine border. He has learned nothing. During the shamnesty deba cle, he called Rush Limbaugh a “nativist”; over the week end, he repeated such con temptuous “straight talk” at the Univision debate by assailing what he called anti- Hispanic rhetoric. So, Bulldog Nation, quit grumping about the BCS. There is always next year. Take pride in the fact that the University of Georgia is a winner in the class room and on the athletic field. Not many institutions can say that. Most of all, be grateful that you don’t have to head for the Pine Beetle Infestation Dot Com Bowl in East Boola-Boola, Idaho, to face the mighty Fresno Raisins.
