WF named to GISA
All-Select Chorus
Special to the Journal
Five members of The
Westfield School’s cho
rus were selected to par
ticipate in the 150-member
GISA All-Select Ciiorus
which performed at the
Georgia Independent
Schools Association’s
Annual Conference in early
November.
The All-Select Chorus is
comprised of the best choral
singers from approximately
50 GISA schools.
The group was direct
ed by Dr. Melissa Arasi,
Supervisor of General and
Choral Music for the Cobb
County School District in
Atlanta. Westfield’s choral
music department, under
the direction of Donna
Hooper, holds the current
Girls Solo state champion
title and the State Runner
up title for Girls Trio.
Westfield’s Boys Quartet
The entire third
grade of The
Westfield School
participated in a 130-
word spelling bee
competition recently.
Noah Robbins took
top honors when he
correctly spelled the
winning word: “chan
neled”. Pictured are

Gamboa has worked as a
FOCUS teacher in Houston
County for six years, includ
ing four years at Russell
Elementary. She was nomi
nated for the award by
Russell’s Principal, Keith
Lauritsen.
“Sandy Gamboa has led
our entire school, not just our
gifted students, in the effort
to differentiate instruction
based on student learning
styles,” Lauritsen wrote
in a nomination letter. “I
have been quite impressed
by her ability to interact
with her students, fellow
teachers and parents. She
is fully committed to our

invited to a luncheon in
Atlanta to receive a SI,OOO
college scholarship.
“The SI,OOO will help pay
for my college tuition,” he
said. “I will probably attend
either Auburn University or
the University of Georgia.”
Throughout the years of
this program the National
Football Foundation, in coor
dination with sponsors, has
given away over half a mil
lion dollars in scholarships
to scholar athletes. Warner

ing, Mrs. Gamboa is a tre
mendous asset to our school

Carmen Foskey, a sixth
grader at Huntington
Middle School who was
taught by Gamboa for five
years, wrote, “Even before
I entered her classroom
she stepped in and took
me under her wing. Mrs.
Gamboa is one of my most
memorable teachers. Even
though I am no longer in her
class, she still keeps an eye
out on how my classmates
and I are doing in school.
She has left her handprint
on my heart.”
The Gifted Teacher of
the Year must demonstrate
commitment to teaching
gifted students, serve as an
advocate for gifted educa
tion and demonstrate evi
dence of leadership within
the school and district.

been published in education
magazines such as Gifted
Child Today.
As the Houston County
Gifted Teacher of the Year,
Gamboa will automatically
be nominated for the state
level award. Nominees must
be:
• a member of HCAGC
and the Georgia Association
for Gifted Children;
• a gifted program teacher
for at least two years;
• presently teaching gifted
students at least two peri
ods of the school day; and,
if selected,
• agree to attend the
GAGC annual conference as
a representative of Houston
County.
Past Gifted Teacher of the
Year winners include Scott
Daniel (2006), Jan Kirchoff
(2005), Janine Davis (2004)
and Peggy McCall (2003).
Daniel and McCall were also
named the Georgia Gifted
Teacher of the Year.
