HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL God’s Word God has spoken to man. He did it through the medium of tiook Billy Powell e nt men of Columnist God over a period of 1600 years (roughly 1500 B.C. to 100 A.D.). It includes 31,102 verses and 775,693 words. The authors include such men as Moses, David, Solomon, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Daniel, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, James, and Jude. The Bible was not written by divine word-for-word dicta tion, but through God-given inspiration, i.e., “Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit,” (II Peter 1:21). The Bible consists of two parts, the Old and New Testaments. The Old Testament tracks the his tory of man—especially the Jewish nation-from creation of the world to the advent of Christ. It contains 39 books and is broken down into five sections: The Law (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), History (12 books), Poetry (5 books) and Prophecy (17 books including five major prophets and twelve minor prophets). The New Testament, which contains 27 books, recounts the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, chronicles the history of the early church, and pro vides God’s plan for man’s salvation made possible by Christ’s resurrection from the dead. It contains four gospels, one history (Acts), one prophecy (Revelation) and 21 epistles (13 written by Paul and eight general epistles). The world begins with Genesis and comes to an end in Revelation. Had Jesus not arisen from the dead, the New Testament would not have been written; in fact, the whole Bible is built around Christ and His promise of everlasting life. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and the New Testament in Greek. The best known English translation of the Bible is the Authorized King James Version published in 1611. It contains some of the most beautiful language in all of literature. Today there are numerous English transla tions of the Bible. The seri ous Bible student will use as many translations as possible to ensure complete under standing of the scriptures. Essential aids to effective Bible study include a concor dance, Bible dictionary, and Bible commentary. A suggested New Year’s resolution is to read the Bible in 2008. The complete Bible can be read at a pulpit pace in about 80 hours. Since the promise and expectation of a Messiah runs through out the Old Testament, once the reading of the New Testament begins, Jesus will suddenly come alive on its pages. In referring to the Old Testament, the Savior Himself said “the Law of Moses, the Books of the Prophets, and the Psalms testify of Me.” Bible study is essential to victorious living. “All scrip ture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doc trine, for reproof, for correc tion, for instruction in righ teousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Bible was written “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:31) Serving Houston County Perry • Warner Robins Member FDIC cbst Bank of Middle Georgia It; ' Us I WMmm 1 jpgs ‘IffSpISP® I HE 4 xv HR M ! ■* M MW'' / £ Lik v Ijtßfilf -hX I llli ' ' , ' „ New Hope Baptist Church broke ground for their long-awaited new church. The incident happened in 1984, when Kevin, a Canadian lad, read about two American boys who earned a computer by denying them selves the pleasure of view ing television for twelve con secutive months. Latching on to the idea, Kevin propositioned his par ents, who were astounded at the suggestion from their young TV addict, that he would resolve not to watch any television for a year if they would reward him for his efforts. Doubtful of their son’s sin cerity to carry through with his commitment, the par ents promised Kevin a S3OO check as his reward.
