SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2007 2A PARADE From page lA things from and/or about donors and is sometimes toured around the country, Sylvia said) approached her the day after he died. “I knew he would have given any and every part,” she said, explaining that due to the severity of his head injuries, there were virtu ally “no efforts” to keep him alive. “They called and inquired about tissue dona tion. “I knew he would say, ‘Mom sure!’ So, I told them absolutely sure. I didn’t have to think about it. “They also told me this one simple tissue donation could help up to 100 people and they said the tissue har vested in this area went to the Augusta Burn Center. “To think that something so simple could save some one else’s life, I was just so pleased (that coming later, of course).” * Sylvia went on to say she had found out - and is still finding out - that it wasn’t just tissue but bones, ten dons and more. “All of those last consid erably longer than organs,” she said - even offering up a for instance. “And my older son Stephen, he recently had the ACL in his left knee totally torn up. He recently had an ACL transplant from a cadaver. All of it is just amazing. Wonderful.” Wonderful like Joe Camp. How do you describe a child you raised for 21 short years? “You need a book,” Sylvia said, and friends, she said have encouraged her to do just that: Write one. But, if you tried to put a finger on it, Joe would be begin - and this is only the beginning, mind you - to be summed up by Sylvia as hav ing a “fabulous poker face and a great sense of humor.” “His favorite movie was that horrible Scarface,” she said. “He could do a per fect Tony Montana (a char acter played by A 1 Pacino). He could imitate his Cuban accent, the whole thing ... And golf. “I used to buy him a cheap bag of golf balls and I bought him a couple of those putters or irons ... or what ever they were. He would stand in the yard and hit golf balls into our woods. We’ll probably be finding those forever. “I remember I used to think because of his laid back manner he would have made a very good golfer.” His career choice, however, was not going to be anything related to sports. He was going to be an architect. “He when he got into it,” she said of a course he had begun taking at the technical school. “He said: ‘I really like this.’ He was exceptionally good in math and science with a good strong math background. He knew he would be able to do it.” But, a sidenote on basket ball. Sylvia added she didn’t know how much he liked basketball until the day of the funeral when she noted several “big bruisers” with tears running down their cheeks. Curious, she asked after ward. “They said they played basketball with him all the time down at the rec,” she said. Joe, who is by the way buried near the front of the cemetery just off of Hwy. 41, can also be partially summed up as the rest of us: less than perfect. In fact, Sylvia freely admitted he once got arrest ed and at one point was even sent to “boot camp.” But boot camp she said she thought turned him around - she said she later wrote the administrator and chaplain to say so - and more impor tantly felt that explained why she found a note some months later after his death in 2001. “It said: ‘I am no longer a non-believer,”’ she said, the note itself written in 1998. “It was awesome! That note ... to find that out ... that he was truly saved was just awesome!” Just as awesome - in con tinuing to gain a glimpse into whom he was - was the relationship he shared with his family - mom, dad, older brother Stephen whom you’ve already heard about, and sisters Karen and Susan. Perhaps more so in the case of Susan, who is the oldest sister. Whsn Joe was born, Sylvia said - all of them inherited their father’s “just get in there and do it” mindset, she added - “she did everything for him and with him.” “I asked her one time, ‘Do you feel like you lost your closest best friend?’ She just nodded and walked away. They were just that close to him.” Perhaps it’s only fitting then Susan - although all of the family members loved him equally and played a part, Sylvia said - helped write the two sentences that will best describe Joe Camp Tuesday to the world. The two sentences that will be written on the memo rial sheet in his name - con densed pretty much down to a two-sentence requirement by the event coordinators. The first: “When nobody else will help you, Joe will be there.” And the second: “Joe’s everybody’s favorite.” “One of the neatest things,” Sylvia said. “Was Joe was a totally giving per son. And that was truly what his life was all about.” “So much good (has come from his life). If you let your self accept it. So much good has come out of a really, really painful situation.” As Joe Camp’s life came and went, you can put a “mis sion complete,” next to his name. But in God’s tall order for humankind: in death, and with the Tournament of Roses Parade now in sight, he’s just now beginning to bloom. •Jewelry Repair & Cleaning •Watch Repair •Engraving •Appraisals •Estate Jewelry •Class Rings 156852 Hours: Mon. -Fri. 9:3osun-s:3opm Sat. 9:3oam-2pm 56850 tm FISH From page lA Natural Resources, which has done most of the study leading up to the Go Fish Georgia initiative, resident and non-resident anglers currently spend about $569 million each year on fish ing in Georgia, and a major I I M ll * I mmr. igi. fsnv'f '^k ; - s v* f* sjw." .. -J fggjMpF. ..
