Beltway media didn’t want
to deliver. There’s a reason
the magazine and newspaper
editors are naming every
thing but the surge as their
top story of the year. (Putin?
The Virginia Tech massacre?
Come on.) Good news in the
war on terror is bad news for
those rooting for failure. Far
easier to play up casualties
and sectarian strife, sensa
tionalize accusations of atroc
ities, and demonize the men
and women in uniform to
indulge Bush Derangement
Syndrome, as Washington
Post staffer and NBC military
analyst William Arkin did on

to Robins AFB. All these
results culminate in adecline in
the standard of living for local
residents and the guarantee
of continuous SPLOSTs and
higher property taxes in the
future to provide and support
the infrastructure required by
Oaky Woods development.
The state’s Department
of Natural Resources once
listed the Oaky Woods site
as the most important to be
maintained in its natural state
for recreational use by cur
rent and future generations
of Georgians. Its importance
cannot be overstated.
Oaky Woods provides
a unique habitat for a wide
variety of flora, fauna and
wildlife. It is home for a black
bear population that would
be lost in the development of
some thirty to forty thousand
houses. Once Oaky Woods
is developed, its unique nat
ural beauty is lost forever.
The recreational opportuni
ties it has afforded sportsmen
and nature lovers will not be
available. Local businesses
and governments will lose
the economic contributions
derived from Oaky Woods
originating by its attraction
to our community of so many
people who are drawn to its
beauty.
There is still the possi
bility that the wonders of
Oaky Woods can be saved
for nature lovers to enjoy,
time is of the essence. There
is a group formed to work
on behalf of preserving this
uniquely beautiful* treasure.
Its many qualities make it a
perfect candidate for either
a state or national park or
forest.

ing to save Oaky Woods, go

will be holding auditions for its
fourth show of the 2007-08 sea
son, “The Old Settler," Jan. 7-8,
2008 at 7:30 p.m. at the theater’s
location on 502 South Pleasant
Hill Road in Warner Robins.
The play is a drama by John
Henry Redwood, Dramatists Play
Service, and directed by Venis
GLover. The script calls for an all
black cast of one man and three
women.
The play’s description: “This
is a gentle,'sweet-natured com

The story chooses to remember
the good without the bad, being
about the relationship of two ‘SO
- church-going spinsters or, as
they were called in those days,
Old Settlers, Elizabeth and her
sister, Quilly. Tfie play revolves
around what happens when a
handsome young fellow, Husband
Witherspoon, newly arrived from
the Deep South, rents a room in
Jan. 30 when he lambasted
troops for enjoying “obscene
amenities” and serving as a
“mercenary” force.
One of the troops Arkin
considers a “mercenary” was
Army 2nd Lt. Mark J. Daily.
On Jan. 19, a reader e-mailed
me that ttie 23-year-old stand
out soldier had been killed in
an IED attack in Mosul along
with three other comrades.
To MoveOn and Democrat
leaders and the anti-surge
press, he’s just another
number. Another “victim.”
Another pawn. But on his

Internet, his immortal words

CORRECTION: Last •
week, I reported that the
omnibus spending bill
included $lO million in
“emergency” funding for
attorneys of illegal aliens.
The information was based
on an erroneous assertion
by House GOP Whip Roy
Blunt. In fact, the funding is
for the U.S. Department of
Justice Civil Division’s Office
of Immigration Litigation to
defend illegal alien deporta
tion orders.
