Special to the Journal
Commercial shad season runs now through midnight
March 31, according to the Georgia Department of N atural
Resources, Wildlife Resources Division. Commercial shad
fishing regulations for the 2008 season are the same as
those during the 2007 season.
The Altamaha River (including the Oconee and
Ocmulgee rivers), the Satilla River and the St. Marys
River downstream from the Seaboard Coastline Railroad
bridge will be open for commercial shad fishing Monday
through Friday each week. Waters upstream from this
bridge will be open Tuesday through Saturday each week.
The Ogeechee River will be open for commercial shad
fishing on Fridays and Saturdays of each week during the
shad season.
The Savannah River will be open for commercial shad
fishing downstream from the 1-95 bridge Tuesday through
Friday and upstream from the 1-95 bridge Wednesday
through Saturday each week. Only drift nets may be used
downstream of a line between the mouth of Knoxboro
Creek and McCoys Cut at Deadman’s Point.
Individuals fishing commercially for shad must have a
valid Georgia commercial fishing license.
The minimum mesh size for legal set or drift shad nets
is 4 1/2 in. stretched. Set netters are reminded that set
nets must be placed at least 600 ft. apart and should be
limited to 100 ft. in length. Set nets must clearly display
the owners name and commercial fishing license number.
Drift nets shall not be fished closer that 300 ft. apart
and are limited to a maximum of 1,000 ft. in length in
saltwater. Set nets and drift nets must be situated so as
to allow one-half the stream width to be open and free for
the passage of fish. All set nets must have one end secured
to the stream bank and must be buoyed at the outer (sea
ward) end so they will be clearly visible to other boaters.
Sturgeon, game fish other than American shad or hickory
shad and all species of catfish taken in set or drift nets
must be released unharmed into the waters where they
were taken.

HORNETS HAVE MIXED RESULTS
For Jake Walls and the Westfield
boys basketball team, the FPD
Holiday Classic didn’t end on a
winning note, a 65-57 loss to Mt.
Vernon Presbyterian. However,
Walls did like the opportunity to
put the Hornets in a tournament
situation and liked the results of
the first two back-to-back games
(the same number of games and
wins Westfield would need to win
the GISA Region 3-AAA champion
ship).

3 structures to target this winter
If we’re going to be hon
est about it, fishing in the
winter isn’t always the most
pleasant activity. It can be
cold, windy and sometimes
getting the fish to cooperate
can be frustrating. But just
because the calendar has
been flipped to December
doesn’t mean that you should
park the boat and resign
yourself to hanging lights
and watching football.
Catching fish in the win
ter requires some knowledge
about the body of water that
you are fishing and a decided
amount of patience. Slowing
down your presentations
will go a long way towards
ensuring you get more than
a runny nose for your time
on the lake.
So before you head out
for your next day of fishing,
try focusing on these three
types of structure.
Bluffs
A lot of tournaments are
won year round on rock
bluffs. Big smallmouth and
largemouth both like to hang
on these bluff ledges during
this time of year. But entic
ing strikes from finicky bass
in winter can be a challenge.
Fish each spot slowly and
don’t limit yourself to just
one lure or technique. In
clear water, natural colored
worms can be very effec
tive for a smallmouth bite.

Main-lake points
Main-lake points hold bass
pretty much year round. But
during winter, when the lake
is low, they really start to
bunch up on these struc
tures. Find a point that is
just out of the swift, main
lake current and there is
likely to be a bunch of bass
feeding on baitfish and cray
fish.

PANTHERS 71, DEMONS 48
Perry and Warner Robins
did battle again on the Jones
County High basketball
court Saturday, this time for
fifth place in the boys divi
sion of the Security Bank of
Gray Classic. The Panthers
- coming off a 90-point out
put to beat East Paulding
on Friday - had six players
score nine or more in rout

Warner Robins struggled
in the first quarter not being
able to make a field goal
for all of its turnovers. The
Demons also had a hard
time containing 6-4 for
ward Trey Smith and point
guard Casey Hayward, who
sparked Perry to an opening
11-2 run. Chase Russell hit
two 3-pointers and Roderick
Jones blocked two shots in
the quarter, which ended
with a 23-10 Panther lead.
Perry doubled up the

free throws in a row. (Pinecrest)

and fouled us. We barely eked it
out.
