Son's trip into the wild is key to becoming independent
QUESTION: My 16-year-old
son wants to go on a super
vised, three-week outing in
a nearby national forest. It
scares me to think of him being
out there somewhere beyond
my ability to help him if he got
in difficulty. Am I right to turn
him down?
DR. DOBSON: I’m sure you
know that within a couple of years
your son will be gone off to college
or to some other pursuit, perhaps
the military, and he will be entirely
beyond your reach. Why not give
him a taste of that independence
now, while he is still under your
care. It will be better for him
to ease away from your influence
than to have it come to a sudden
end.
There was a moment during my
teen years when my mother and I
had a similar debate. I was 16 years
old and had been invited to work
on a shrimp boat during the sum
mer. The captain and crew were
tough dudes who didn’t put up
with any nonsense. It was a man’s

The following appeared on

collection of actual church

typos or just plain flubs that
appeared in church bulletins
around the country.

But as I have said before, Lord help both

it was wonderful. Yes, we still went hiking that
day.
I could go on but you get the picture or
maybe you don’t. Just about two miles further
down that same dirt road is the site of the
new “privately owned city” that has caused
so much controversy. “No Trespassing” signs
now hang from trees where I saw the bear.
Houses are being built where I saw the bird.
Soon a water treatment plant will be built
where we looked for river access.
I won’t go into the politics because frankly
I don’t understand them and thinking about
the obvious greediness of the owners only
serves to make me angry. I definitely won’t

QUESTION: Our family lives
an exhausting lifestyle - we
just can’t seem to find a way
to slow down! It gets depress
ing at times. Do you have any
words of advice for us?
DOBSON: Let me share some
thing that may help you and your
husband make the tough choices
on which a slower lifestyle could
depend.
Do you remember Vince Foster,
who reportedly committed suicide
during the early days of the Clinton
administration? He was deputy
counsel to the president before
Carter were married on
October 24 in the church. So
ends a friendship that began
in their school days.
R A bean supper will be
held on Tuesday evening in
the church hall. Music will
follow.
■ At the evening service
tonight, the sermon topic
will be “What is Hell?” Come
early and listen to our choir
practice.
■ Eight new choir robes
are currently needed, due to
the addition of several new
members and to the deterio
ration of some older ones.
■ Scouts are saving alu
minum cans, bottles, and
other items to be recycled.
Proceeds will be used to crip
ple children.
■ Please place your dona
tion in the envelope along
with the deceased person
you want remembered.
■ Attend and you will hear
an excellent speaker and

one who
doesn’t
care much
about you.

what he told the students on that
occasion:
“A word about family: You have

that observation that no one was
