World-class quartet to perform
Special to the Journal
To kick off the New Year,
the founder of the Ocmulgee
Symphony Orchestra, Dr.
Charles Quinn, according to
a release, has a “rare treat
in store for music lovers of
the Ocmulgee River area.
“The Jose White Quartet,
according to the release, is a
“top-notch group of young
and extremely talented
performers who are just at
the beginning of a world
career.”
“I am tremendously
pleased that we were able to
get them to come to perform
in our inaugural concert
series,” said Quinn. “You
will love them!”
Quinn, according to the
release, has been in close
contact for the past year
with the group’s manager
in New York City to secure
their Hawkinsville Opera
House debut, which is sched
uled for Jan. 22 at 7:30 pm.
The quartet won the
first and only prize in the
Third National Competition
of Chamber Music in
Guanajuato, Mexico in 2000,
that country’s most presti
gious musical accolade. The
musicians share a broad
musical training and varied
performance experience.
With three of the origi
nal ensemble players hav
ing been born in Cuba (the
other is Mexican-American)
the members decided to
pay tribute to Jose Lafitte
White, indisputably Cuba’s
greatest violinist of the
19th- and early 20th-centu
ry and the only one to have
a world-class career based in
Europe.
White was an inspiration
to countless string play

I used to worry about
this too until my husband
logically told me, “If they
get cold, they’ll either come
inside or get a jacket”.
I hate to admit it, but he
was right. How many times
have you ever heard of a
child freezing to death or
getting frostbitten because
they didn’t wear a jacket
outside to play? One thing
you certainly don’t have
to worry about is your kid
going barefoot outside in
winter.
Once those little piggies
hit that cold ground, they

For it to become organ
ic matter, it must first be
decomposed into humus.
Humus is defined as mate
rial which has been con
verted by microbes into a
resistant state of decompo
sition. While organic mate
rial is unstable in the soil
(as much as 90 percent of
it quickly disappearing due
to decomposition), organic
matter is stable.
Organic matter (also
known as humus) is an
important soil component.
It offers several benefits,
namely increased water
holding capacity, improved
friability (workability), and
nutrient availability.
Unfortunately, most soils
in the South have a low
organic matter content of
between one or two percent
due to our relatively high
temperatures and other
conditions. This is a major
limiting factor in our quest

America for many genera
tions. So in the mid-90s the
Cuarteto Jose White came
into existence and began
rehearsing and building
repertoire; the quartet’s
formal debut was during
the 1997-98 season when
it was featured in a con
cert at the notable Chamber
Music Festival, San Miguel
de Allende, Guanajuato, and
at other venues in Mexico
and Canada. Its first per
formances elicited great
success; the Quartet par

are running back inside to
find some shoes.
Something else that
mothers spend hours wor
rying and pestering their
children about is eating. We
worry that they are eating
way too little when they are
toddlers and then we worry
that they are eating way
too much when they are
teenagers.
But, your pediatrician is
right. They’ll eat when they
get hungry. If pediatricians
were polled, the question of
eating would probably be
number one.
We sit for what seems like
hours trying to get our kids
to eat. We bribe, cajole, and
even beg for them to take
for higher garden yields. If
organic matter is such an
important ingredient, what
can we do to increase it?
Once of the easiest ways
is to incorporate leaves into
the soil. Fallen leaves carry
50 to 80 percent of the
nutrients a tree extracts
from the soil and air during
the season - the carbon,
potassium, phosphorus and
other elements essential to
plant growth.
The organic material that
leaves contribute to the soil
is rich in lignin and cel
lulose. *
The fiber and glue of
plants, these compounds
break down slowly and
have long-lasting and pos
itive effects on the soil’s
organic matter content and
thus its tilth, aeration, and
moisture-holding capacity.
As leaves break down,
they glue particles of soil
together into crumbs. As
the crumbs form, pore
spaces are created. As a
result, the soil gains a
greater capacity for taking

just one more bite. Don’t
feed them for a couple of
meals and see what hap
pens.
Your picky eater will be
begging for any crumbs you
throw their way.
For centuries, mothers
have made worrying a full
time job. But when we look
back at some of the things
we worry about, We just
have to laugh.
So stop worrying and give
your kids a break. You’ll be
amazed at how much fun
you can have.

in air and water - it then
takes more rain to cause
waterlogging and a longer
drought to cause wilting.
It’s clear that the addition
of organic matter to the soil
is the best way to solve soil
problems and improve an
otherwise good soil. And an
excellent way to accomplish
this is to add leaves, raw,
mulched, or composted,
in the fall or winter. One
thing’s for sure-leaves are
nothing but good for your
garden.
