Westfield debate team wins region, guns ior state
By DON MONCRIEF
Journal Managing Editor
Chad Ekey - and others
like him in similar situations
- has perhaps the most chal
lenging job in high school.
He’s a “debate teacher.’* Can
you imagine? For these stu
dents. EVERYTHING IS UP
FOR DEBATE!
Ekey, who is Westfield
School’s debate teacher,
even has an added chal
lenge. Not to insult him,
but he’s kind of a rookie.
Not a rookie in terms of
teaching at Westfield - he’s
been teaching AP classes
for some time; European
History, U.S. History (he’s
also one of the Hornets’
wrestling coaches ... “a man
who wears many hats,”
summed one administrator)
but it is his first year as
head of the debate team. (He
took over for Doug Crosby
who he said recently left to
go and teach AP classes at
Northside.)
It’s also his first experience
with a debate club in general
as he said they didn’t have
one when he came through
Westfield School.
Now, having said all that,
it’s more than fair to say
he’s holding his own quite
well.
Westfield won region Jan.
9 - and in fact it’s second

up. Now, the team consist
ing of Jacob Parnell, Kim
Campbell, Lindsay Lucas,
Elise Wille, Kaci Whiddon
and Cleve Cleveland, will be
trying to better their run
ner-up finish at state last
year.
They will compete at state
again beginning Friday and
running through Saturday
at Mercer University.
What they, the team, do
know is the topic. They’ve
known that since the sum
mer, Ekey said, adding it was
set and published nationally.
It’s: Sending aid to Africa.
Should the U.S. Government
substantially increase aid to
that part of the world ?
What they don't know,
won’t know until the com
petition begins, is whether
they’re going to be “affirma
tive” or “negative.”
“So they (the debaters)
have to know both sides of the
issue,” Ekey said, “and then
debate it (based on which
side - affirmative or negative
- they’re assigned).”
“We’ve built up a lot of
different information on it,
different ways of attacking.
If they’re affirmative or if
they have a negative we’ll
push our policy and stuff
like that.”
As far as strategy, Ekey
said you try and provide as
many solutions as possible.
‘'That way if you can pro
vide more effective ways
to solving it, you should
generally win the debate
... Because you’ve actually
attacked and they can’t sup
ply a counterpoint.”
“Sometimes,” he added,
“it comes down to teams
like Stratford throwing so
many ideas out there that
you can’t attack everything
they said. So you’ve just got
to basically accept it. So,
they have more numbers in
the end and they win by
quantity.
“Good debaters will throw
out so many good ideas in
a short period of time that
it’s hard to answer. So, it’s
not like when you think of a
Presidential debate or any
thing like that.”
Westfield, which boasts
nothing but seniors - expe
rience is a big key, Ekey said
- will be going against 15
teams during the competi
tion, which he said could and
typically would begin in the

morning and last into the
night - although it’s “very
quick”, he added.
Each will be trying to gain
anywhere from 20-30 avail
able points - about 26 is
the average, he said. All of
course will be worthy oppo
nents but the aforemen
tioned Stratford, which won
last year, even more so. It is
also ranked nationally, but
he added, Westfield actually
beat one of the team’s from
the Macon school earlier this
year (the first time in school
history, he believed).
“That’s good,” he said.
“That really made us happy.
But it’s also to research as
much information as pos
sible. Hopefully find an idea
they’ve never heard of. And
then, they can’t attack it.”
