were made worse by the
fact she still had four
children to raise - two
sons and two daughters,
the oldest in high school, the
youngest just a little more
than 9.
What to do?
Well, for one thing, what
ever she did, she was not
going to do it alone.
“I got down on my knees
and asked the Lord to change
me,” she said. “I was young
and I had four children to
raise but I never wanted to
put them on welfare. I never
wanted to ask for help.
“I wanted to do it myself.
(In fact, she said every dress
her daughters ever wore
while growing up was made
by her). And that’s what I
did.”
Thus reads one chapter of
Cora Williams’ life. The lat
est chapter reads via a news
release from a celebration in
her honor: “Congratulations
Mrs. Cora on a job well done!
After 35 years of faithful
services, Mrs. Cora Williams

community problem like the
old Fort Valley High School,
which, according to Perry
High alumnus and chroni

and in dilapidated condi

However, it is standing
because of team of leaders
who went to the effort, back
in the early 19905, not only
of saving the building for
future use, but also find
ing funding for its complete
restoration. The auditorium
that former students like
Powell, Larry Walker and
Sam Nunn received their
high school diplomas in is
now the well-maintained
auditorium that many are
most familiar with as the
site of Board of Education
meetings and other commu
nity events.
There is a museum in
honor of former U.S. Sen.
Nunn, and a vintage class
room from the old days.
Showcases are filled with
the triumphs of the past,
and former classrooms are
now outfitted with high
tech computers and modern
office furniture.

If you’ve picked a favorite for your party’s
nomination for the presidency, you’ll have
your chance to participate in the process
on Feb. 5. If you haven’t, decision time is
drawing near.
Georgia is one of 19 states that will hold
a presidential preference primary for both
parties on “Super Tuesday”, while five
other states will hold caucuses or elections
for only one party.

Another chapter, the one
that begins after her hus
band’s passing, reads that
she took on two to three jobs
at a time to 4 raise those four
children.
The youngest of those -
in today’s setting - is Fred
Douglas Williams. Then there
is Willhelmia Passmore.and
Carol Releford. The oldest
was Lee Releford. If she felt
God was testing her with
the passing of her husband
that was just the first part.
Lee, who was an employee
on Robins Air Force Base,
died one day in an automo
bile accident. Only she said
she thought he was dead
- an apparent heart attack -
before his car struck a pole.
“I think he had already
been sick,” she said. “It
didn’t even dent his car.”
Nothing has been able to
dent her spirit.
At around age 28 or 29, she
attended beautician’s school
in Macon. That led to own

worked alongside three oth

Born and raised in Houston

also born in Houston County
but later separated when
she was 6 months old - he,
T.J. Clark, went to Cordele

on), she, Nellie Morgan,
stayed here - she was an
only child.
Growing up in a broken
home, she said, has helped
her with the long, long chap
ter that followed the beauti
cian’s job at Houston County
Development Center.
“It helped me a little bit
(in terms of) understanding
some of the children,” she
said. “I see a lot of them.
They’re all out and grown
and have good jobs and that
makes me feel good.
“They come around and
still ask me to fix food for
them ... bread and stuff like
that.”
The cooking part - turnip
and collared greens and such
(not that she makes up most
of that at the center these
days) - she learned from her
mother and preparing big
meals for a big family, adding
vices as well.
The building hasn’t just
been saved. It has been put
to good use for the 21st
century, while honoring the
memories of those of earlier
generations for whom it was
a beloved alma mater.

board meeting last Tuesday
and listed on a plaque that
now hangs in the building’s
front lobby were: Mayor Jim

These votes are generally not binding,
but shape the outcome of the parties’ con
ventions at which nominees are chosen for
the presidential campaign.
In Georgia, the ballot includes the follow
ing candidates. But voter should be aware
that some have withdrawn their candidacy
since their names were placed on the bal
lot.
Voter can choose to vote on either party’s
ballot regardless of prior party preference.
There is no party registration in Georgia.
The voting will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
in “a lot of cousins” into that
mix, she said.
And, it should be added,
one of the reasons some of
her former children still
come around - not that they
wouldn’t anyway - is that
now they have their own
children at the center.
“Some of them when they
come around say I taught
them how to say ‘good morn
ing’,'how to say their prayers,
that sort of thing (manners).
They say, ‘I sure appreciate
you acting toward me the
way you did.’ They always
treat others nice. They’re
very nice children ... Adults
now.”
The next chapter in Cora
Williams’ life, with retire
ment, is just beginning. She
has arthritis - bad enough
to have to walk with a cane
- and last year she had a
light heart attack.
“They had to ... it wasn’t
open heart or anything like
that,” she said, “but they
did find some pockets ... they
had to release those.”
Her plan right now she said
is just to stay at home (she is
also trying to find anything
and everything relating to
her husband), “rock some”
